Good hotel, very central to shops and tourist sights. Limited food options that open late near by. Hotel clean and provides good service. Swimming pool not very inviting for people to go into. Bar service was excellent and staff very friendly and helpful.

The Nuo is the old Raffles, close to all that Beijing has to offer. The lobby is beautiful but was not well air conditioned to cope with the Beijing August weather. The hotel is connected to a new part and to two other hotels, 4* properties. The rooms in both the new wing and the old wing are desparately in need of a makeover, chipped paint, water damaged ceilings and such were evident. The restaurant was good for breakfast, with a wide Western and Chinese selection. A highlight of the hotel is the adjacent beer garden for the Hotel Beijing which is 50 steps away. Stay here is you need to be near the First Ring Road and Tianamenm but don't expect 5* luxury.

There is more than a touch of old world Peking in this hotel but it has been maintained to a high standard making it both a great historical choice and fabulous modern hotel. They have also, somehow, managed to find staff who can, at least in part, think outside the box to look after the customers, which is rare in China. When you add the historical context this hotel becomes an obvious choice for the aesthete and cultural traveller, right in the centre of Beijing close to the forbidden city and the Wangfujing shopping area. Special thanks go to William in housekeeping but also the other members of the executive team: Terry and Michael, for making me, my wife and two kids feel so welcome.

This hotel has had excellent service with most lobby employees having fluid English. Bathroom was also stocked with more amenities than the average hotel, dental kit, shaving kit, loofah, etc. very spacious and cozy room with European antique style. The breakfast is extensive and amazing, fresh squeezed juices and the cheese platter station are among my favorite stations.

However, if you are looking for a China experience all around, this isn’t it. This hotel is a breath of fresh air to me as I have been in China for two weeks and am comforted by the familiar western feel at this point in the trip. To someone looking for new, exotic, or an oriental atmosphere I would not recommend this hotel. Additionally, locating the spa has been a bit unusual as we were told it was closed, but later found it in the basement, almost completely unmarked. The staff was friendly but we didn’t get any treatments done as it “felt a little off”.

This hotel was likely a lovely 5 star hotel in its heyday many years ago but now it is tired and dusty and the rooms need a complete renovation. The rooms are very large and the bed was comfortable and there is a mini fridge in the room. That is where the good news ends. There was so much dust in the hall and closet area of the room I sneezed non stop. I asked the front desk to come see this and a nice young lady accompanied me back to my room and I showed her base boards with thick black dust that hadn't been cleaned in a very long time and she assured me the cleaning staff would attend to it but they never did during our 3 night stay. There was paint chipping off the doors and baseboards, the mirror frame was coming apart. The wood furniture is very poor quality and the upholstery on the bench was stained and needed to be replaced. I would not even set my suitcase on it. We did not pay the $26 a person for breakfast and decided instead just to grab a cappuccino at the bar before heading out. The cappuccino to go was $11! That is outrageous in China. When I questioned the price I was told that is the price when you stay at a 5 star property and I almost laughed out loud.

There are so many better choices in the area. If cleanliness is a priority for you than book elsewhere.
