We went with a guide who was good with history and he explained the period of Iran's history and gave the context to the exhibits which made the visit very interesting. Another group of my friends when without a guide and they found it very boring. So I'd recommend looking for a guide

First of all, the building is master piece, inspired from Tagh-e Bostan architecture. There are articles from prehistory till Sasani dynasty, till Islam.
Object from Islamic era are kept in a separate building nearby.

Not really a museum person but we decided to get a snapshot of Arian/ Iranian history by viewing the artifacts in this museum. It was well laid out and recorded, we discovered the little knowledge we learned during this event contributed to our enjoyment days later.

The layout and exhibits in the museum could do with some work as they are not presented in the most engaging manner, however in saying this the museum has many fascinating pieces in their collection which are well worth seeing as they give you a real appreciation of the long history of the country and the people.
You can spend a couple of hours here.
My favourite part of the visit was meeting a class of young children who wanted to speak to me to find out where I came from. Their teacher used this chance meeting for them to practice their English
