Good hotel

Review of Hotel Mercury
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 9 Oct 2015
Good and clean hotel with all amenities, centrally located, breakfast poor (as with most middle asian/eastern european hotels); friendly, welcoming staff. Would recommend this hotel for leisure and business.

I moved to this place from another (not very good) hotel in Dushanbe and was pleased with service and quality of property. For the price of tiny room in centrally placed bad hotel I received big, clean and pleasant room with a/c (which I did not use - just opened windows to rose garden at night). The place is secure, close to the main street and easy to reach. The hotel is on the side street in the residential area that seems quite secure to me. Breakfast (included in price) could have been better, but considering overall standards in this country it was OK. WiFi was excellent, satellite TV had many channels but few in English language.

However, the hotel manager (who was friendly and cooperative) made a mistake by not extending my registration after I moved there from another hotel. As a result I had problems at the airport when border guard found out that I was registered only for fraction of days that I've spent in Dushanbe. After long bickering with officer in charge the problem was solved in accordance with local "tradition" for a donation of Benjamin Franklin portrait. Please be very careful with "registration" to avoid problems that often happen with international travelers in this country.

Room was quiet, relatively clean and bathroom functional. Breakfast was sparse. I've traveled globally but Central Asia was new to me so I don't know what to compare this to. My room looked out on what appeared to be a poor housing area but beyond were beautiful mountains.

We spent three nights here on business. The hotel arranged for a driver to pick us up at the airport, and they can also arrange registration with local police if you stay longer than three days.
As others have written, the rooms are indeed spacious and warm. The bed is hard but as you would expect in the region. There is a heater in the room, as well as facilities to make tea and coffee (you have to bring your own), a mini-fridge, etc. There is no restaurant but you can order from local restaurants, and they will deliver to the hotel. The internet connection is generally quite good.
The main drawback for this hotel are the in-room bathrooms which have absolutely NO VENTILATION. This means that you can shower in the evening and still have a steamy mirror in the morning if you keep the bathroom door shut. No ventilation ever = bad smell forever. I'm a bit sensitive to smells so maybe this wouldn't bother everyone.
The breakfast is basic but ok.
The neighbourhood roosters start early here, so bring earplugs!

The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Our room was warm and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was good. The staff didn't speak a lot of English but it was enough for our stay. Unfortunately they didn't tell is when we checked in in the morning that we would be charged for the previous night until we came to pay the bill.

So I stayed in a big room with a friend. We each had a room and one common living room. The staff were great. They pulled some major strings to get my card to work to pay for the room. The had Internet. Kind of spotty though. Food was everything I wanted. Good job guys!!!
