Firstly we had booked a Colonial suite for 4 nights but having read this building was closed due to refurbishment then reading very mixed reviews on the other accommodation our tour operator made contact with the hotel to voice our concerns and they were assured that we would be upgraded to a deluxe villa and a note would go on the system to ensure we had ‘a nice room’. Upon arrival they had in fact upgraded us to ridiculously large accommodation (grand piano in the lounge)that had so many rooms it was like a maze plus we only had one mosquito plug in !! This accommodation was also in dire need of refurbishment and a good clean from what we saw.
We were moved to a deluxe villa which although also required refurbishment was in better shape than the previous accommodation offered. Here the issues began:
The path outside the villa was of brick/ block construction which had dangerously lifted up in places creating a trip hazard and was also so slippery due to lack of maintenance.
The mosquito nets around the bed were dirty - no excuse.
The bed although changed daily felt damp as the air con unit was directly above the bed.
We were out for 7 hours on two consecutive days and on return the room had not been touched....again inexcusable.
With the exception of the first evening we had to telephone housekeeping as no one had been to light the mosquito coils and boy were there some mosquitoes for company !
The positives:
The staff were delightful, professional, friendly and helpful especially Boonarpa Sriwawtanapong the guest service manager who did her utmost to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and couldn’t have been more apologetic over the issues raised.
The grounds and the buildings within these grounds are just awesome which is the reason we wanted to stay at the Dhara Dhevi and not at any of the other 5 star hotels in Chiang Mai....here we were not disappointed, it is such a beautiful place to walk around.
The swimming pool is possibly the largest we have ever experienced in a hotel. Spotlessly clean and the pool area staff were so attentive providing newspapers, magazines, cold flannels, water and fresh fruit skewers. Nothing was too much trouble.
Buffet breakfast was fantastic with a tremendous choice to exceed your expectations.
The hotels Thai and Italian restaurants were reasonably priced and both served excellent cuisine in an authentic atmosphere.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay but the accommodation sadly let’s this beautiful hotel and also its staff down. It’s in dire need of some serious investment to restore it to what must have been a truly majestic hotel.....but still worth a visit as long as you don’t expect 5 star accommodation.

The place was even more stunning in person! If you are looking for a traditional Northern Thai experience, this is the place. We didn't even have to step out of the hotel - there were already so much to explore. The Thai restaurant and cake shop were actually decent. Breakfast buffet was okay. Our villa (with a plunge pool overlooking the rice field) was beautiful and clean (espresso machine was a plus). The bathroom was huge with a jet tub and a semi-outdoor shower. You can get around the property by golf cart but it's highly recommended that you rent a bike (free). The hotel itself is an artwork. I felt like I was in a palace.

Unique experience. Super zen. Excellent service. I'd definitely stay at Dhara Dhevi again (hopefully in the near future)!

Room Tip: The Villa is worth the money

At these prices one expects luxury: style and atmosphere... Dhara Dhevi used to be a Mandarin Oriental property - the management stopped in 2013 and it looks as if the owners have lost interest in the the property and simply stopped maintaining it to levels one expects when dropping USD400-500.

The property which was designed as a tranquil piece of paradise looks like a war zone, missing tiles, peeling paint, buildings with warning signs that you cannot enter because of severe danger and ongoing construction and maintenance... that’s probably several years overdue. We left after 5 minutes on-site and checked into the Four Seasons instead.

Avoid at all costs.

I stayed in the colonial villa, near to the spa house of the resort. When I first entered my villa, I spent one hour in awe, speechless. It was the most beautiful, wonderful and coziest I had ever been to. Everything was perfect and lovely, every tiny detail was given attention for our comfort. I just love it!!

Not to mention the staff hospitality and warmth makes your stay even better. The food was gorgeous too!
Will surely take my family and friends here for our next holiday.

This is a truly unique hotel the likes of which I’ve never seen after visiting Thailand for 15 years.
The carved detail around the lobby, spa and restaurants are breathtaking, reading reviews about the hotel needing refurbishment amazes me,the antique, old world deco is a massive part of it’s charm.
Breakfast and Thai restaurant are excellent as well as the cake shop.
Staff and service on our visit was second to none, buggies come to fetch you in no time even at the very bottom of the resort..
I had the most wonderful experience at the spa,I had a massage with Tong who was EXCEPTIONAL.. to miss a trip and a treatment at this spa would be a sin!
This is a wonderful, unique place to visit,10 mins from town,I was always glad to come back to this wonderful hotel after going outside.. If it’s a sleek, clinical hotel with no personality then don’t come here.. embrace it’s old world style and you’re in for a treat.. sad to leave..
