Upon arrival and before doing anything in Bangkok, visit first the Tourist Center. It is a government office which help foreigners to discuss tourist attractions, and other plans for your stay. They also asked us of our next destination. When we told them we are going to Cambodia, they offered us land transportation from our hotel in Thailand until our hotel in Siem Reap. Their price is much cheaper than found in the internet. Also, this is a hotel to hotel service! But when you book for bus online, you need to go to the bus station. Visit Tourist Center first when you arrive in Bangkok. It's near the city. Just ask the tuk tuk driver.

In Bangkok for a few days, I signed up for the BB15 tour of the River Kwai bridge with related activities. This was an all-day trip (12 hours) that involved a lengthy minibus trip from Bangkok to the Kanchanaburi district. Upon pickup from our Bangkok hotel in a minibus, we found our driver to be a madman: driving the wrong way on oneway streets, swerving wildly from lane to lane on the highway, a scary trip. No welcome or commentary. Upon reaching Kanchanaburi, a young woman boarded the bus and proved to be our local tour guide. She was barely literate in English and provided no commentary or background whatsoever for our group. We were simply deposited at designated sites, told how much time we had, and were then taken to the next site. We did in fact view the reconstructed bridge over the River Kwae, no explanation provided. Then, after a lengthy delay, we boarded a train for a ride through the countryside from Point A to Point B. Again, no context or explanation provided. After a lunch with mysterious food on a floating restaurant we were taken to a waterfall. Unfortunately the waterfall was completely dry, which was known to the tour guide beforehand. We waited for over an hour at this spot before being taken back to Bangkok in the minibus. Bottom line, a largely wasted day, do not recommend this tour.

Let me say upfront that we were absolutely delighted with our guide Pakkie and our driver Mr Ton. Pakkie was an absolutely brilliant narrator all through our tour around the temples, the Grand Palace and the river / canal and her English was superb. However, we paid 4,200 baht per person through our hotel, the AETAS Bangkok, for the "triple tour option" of the Grand Palace, Temples and City, and the Bangkok Canal, which is probably a little bit higher than some of the other companies charge for a private trip. However we were told that the tour company didn't do a full day tour. This also meant that we had to provide lunch. Also the day was rounded off with a visit to a gemstone factory. Pakkie did ask us if this was ok but it was a waste of time as I NEVER buy jewellery on impulse. The individual itineraries mentioned three places we never actually visited: the Marble Temple, the Royal Barge Museum, and the Temple of Dawn (the latter we chose to miss out as it's covered in scaffold). But we did do a few fun things like prepare lotus flowers to offer at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and feed the river fish. Chilled water and freshener towels were provided which were very welcome. So once again, brilliant tour guide and driver, but check prices.

Just returned from fantastic tour of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Too many places to rate so I'll just rate the tour guide as one of the best. Her name was Oh (her Thai name is very long and unpronounceable). If you book with Gate 1, try to get her as your guide. Great sense of humor, knowledge of local history and attractions and willingness to work very hard to make sure we all had a great time.
