Kidus Raguel Church is found on the Entoto Hills about 2.5 km from Entoto St. Mary Church. It is the oldest church in Addis Ababa founded by Emperor Menelik II, the founder of Addis Ababa, about 140 years ago.
It is an ideal church for visitors who want to see a typical Ethiopian Orthodox Christians painting art in Addis Ababa as the church's interior wall is decorated with beautiful hand paintings as old as the church. It is amazing how the colors are still bright and vivid.
In the church compound visitors can also visit an abandoned rock carved church chiseled in the rock 700 years ago. There is also a small museum displaying old manuscripts, crosses, and other church relics.
Entrance fee for foreign visitors is 100 Ethiopian Birr per person.
Enjoy visiting this beautiful old church!!
This is a somewhat less mainstream attraction in Addis, which makes it really attractive! Its a traditional octagonal shaped Ethiopian church building. The interior houses magnificent floor to ceiling paintings depicting the gospel. There is also an old "cave" church on the property that can be visited. I believe that with the exception of active church services, the building is normally locked and requires access from the curator. The church is located on Mount Entoto which in itself makes for a great hike / walk up if you have the time and energy.
the ascent Ethiopian orthodox tewahdo church. the design and the material that made from is very fabulous.
I have visited this church last week. One can visit this incredible church by one day combining Entoto Mariam Church. The church has long history and has many iconography but need arrangements.
The panoramic view is incredible for Addis Ababa.
A must visit while visiting Entoto hill.
There is an entry fee of 100 birr and makes it worthwhile to use a guide. My guide was John and was happy at a tip of 50 birr.
The church is 135 years old and like all traditional Ethiopian churches is Octagonal in shape and two levels. Octagonal shape is in honour of the seven arch angels and the almighty. The church has three entrances one for the priests, one for the women and the third for men.
The church has three layers......the innermost is only accessible by the priests. The outer layer is for followers and the outermost is to accommodate more people during special occasions.
The church is constructed by stone, juniper tree wood.
The outer walls of the innermost layer has beautiful murals done by local artists and dates back to the time the church was built. The colours are all natural flower and plant extracts.
There is a museum about a few hundred feet away with lot of historical relics.
Very valuable … and I wondered why it was not shifted to the national museum. Explanation the guide gave was because the first place n church was here, even before addis was born. Doesn't justify keeping such important relics with no security. Photography was prohibited inside the museum.
There is a church cut into a rock. It also has three sections and is known to the the church used by the king before the kiddus raguel church was built. There are several graves built into the vertical rock face which is the Ethiopian way of Cremation for famous people.
The church and the surrounding is very quiet and serene compared to other churches. Good place to enjoy the serenity of the mountain
Just 2 kilometers up the road from Menelik's palace and Entoto Miryam, this octagonally shaped wooden church (which is no longer in use as a church) has an incredible set of icons. Keep your eye out for the last supper! No flash photography, dark and dingy, but worth the effort. Visit the museum as well, and don't miss the church hewn into the rock on the same grounds. Our guide was informative, and his English was quite good.
