Nice hotel but overpriced

Review of JM Residence
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Aug 2018
the rooms are clean and good-sized but very basic, which is fine, except that the hotel advertises itself as a luxury hotel, which it's not. So it's very expensive for the services offered (I paid 110 USD/night). The location is nice and quiet though and you have electricity and running water round the clock. The wifi works but it's very slow at times
However the conference services were not recommendable at all. We organised a workshop and the air-conditioning didn't work and nobody bothered to fix it, even after several requests. The catering is also extremely basic.

I've stayed four weeks in J.M. Residence in June-July 2018. I was staying in the one located on Rue Gamal Abd el Nasser, the street behind the Notre-Dame Cathedral. The area is one of the safest in Bangui and it has electricity almost 24/7. (The hotel also has a backup generator.)
I was in one of the suits, which is a slightly larger room with a small hall and own bathroom. The room was very basic, but it was clean and had AC, fridge and TV. All windows and doors are equipped with mosquito nets. The hotel has wifi however the speed varies a lot, and is usually pretty slow.
The hotel has breakfast where they serve milk, cereals, bread & pastries, fruits, instant coffee and you can order eggs; they order the pastries and bread daily from Grand Cafe. The restaurant serves meals for lunch and dinner and they have room service which is very convenient.
All in all, the hotel is a good option to stay while in Bangui, however the room prices are high (which is the case everywhere in Bangui it seems).

There is some improvement over the last months. The management is clearly taking their task serious, with an updated telephone system, staff who are not performing are being replaced. They are clearly benefiting from the overall lack of decent accommodation here in town and maintain therefore also extremely high prices compare with average quality.

Room tip: I suggest you always ask to see the rooms. Be aware also that there are three JM residences.

I occupy one of their suites for long-term rent. It’s much less than what you would get in a standard service department for the prize, but considering the high costs of living here I suppose there are OK. Strongly recommended for short stays and most of the time I recommend this to the consultants or short time visitors. Restaurant is not great but basically good if you want local food especially venison or small antilope. Breakfast is served in the restaurant but you have to be quick in the morning if you want a croissant. They have washing machines for the laundry, so you shirts are not scrubbed up on the floor with a brick. Staff is very gently and helpful, and managers tried to look professional and give you a quick assistance. Still overpriced, with you can negotiate for longer stays.

Room tip: There are actually three JM’s . I stayed at the one in front of the national assembly which is a bit isolated

The hotel is advertised as a luxury hotel and the prices indicate the same but in fact it is a very basic guest house style place. I stayed in the JMR III which is located on a quiet and nice little street close to the centre of town. The staff was nice and the rooms were spacious. The only serious criticism I have is that the toilet was not properly cleaned when I came. Other than that, it's fine.
