“Safe lodgings, very clean but overpriced”

The guesthouse associated with the Relais des Chasses restaurant is very expensive. There is a refrigerator in the kitchen, however the generator is switched off at 1am and not switched back on again until 5am. This makes water pool at the bottom of the fridge and may lead to food spoilage. There is no airconditioning or ceiling fans operating while the airconditioning is turned off nor are there any lights. The kitchen is supposed to be equipped with a coffee maker, saucepans and crockery however the residents who stay there have bought their own as they were not supplied. Of course none of this would matter if the residents were not paying the price for a service which is not supplied. If accommodation was charged at a backpacker price it would be fine.

I work for a humanitarian organization and was on mission in Bangui for a week. I ended up staying at the Relais des Chasses. In some ways it was amazing, friendly staff, incredible food (I was told it was included in the room rate, two meals a day). The rooms are basic, but reasonably clean and I felt safe there. Note that there is no generator so when the lights go out late in the night.....you'd better have a flashlight. The wifi also comes and goes. However - the restaurant is closed on Monday - yet the room rate (with the meals included) does not change for that day. Furthermore, when I checked out, they provided a breakdown of the meal costs which meant that the total I was obliged to pay (which was the same as I had been told at the start of the stay) in effect reduced the room rate so that the overall cost of staying there (room plus relatively costly meals) was not covered appropriately by per diem. So be aware of this.

There are not many choices in Bangui, but this restaurant offers good food and a relaxing, convivial atmosphere. Although not everything on the menu is actually available, there is a broad choice for all tastes.

The antelope stew was particularly good!!

First French restaurant ever in CAR and so far probably the best. The ambiance is nice and relaxing, with soft live music in the background. Food is overpriced but this resto serves some really delicious food. Fridays and during the weekend - this place gets full-packed with expats looking for a safe haven so be early if you want to get served fast.
