We went here for breakfast last Saturday, and the food was so good that we returned Sunday for lunch! The gentleman who takes the orders on the weekend is so nice - an entertainer and great salesperson - convincing everyone to try the local specialties. Their blueberry buckwheat pancakes with real maple syrup are delicious! Tried johnny cakes and fried green tomatoes for the first time and they were also very good. However, the piece de resistance was their crab cake! I have tried crab cakes in many places and in several states, but the crab cakes here were absolutely the best! The line up for this spot is often lengthy, but moves quickly. I highly recommend trying this eatery at the Eastern Market if you are in the Washington area! We will certainly be back!

We went on the weekend for breakfast at The Market Lunch inside the main hall at Eastern Market. This was a popular, lively place with a queue. Seats were at a long communal bench top table which looked full and we thought that we would be standing, holding our food waiting for a spot. However, people ate and moved on and by the time we got our food, there were spots available. Crab cakes were great. Portions were large and we had the chance to try ‘grits’, which was a new experience.
I probably wouldn't suggest that you go out of your way to travel here but if you are staying nearby, this is an interesting place to pop into.

So disappointed by this place. We arrived at 10:50 only to be told that breakfast was over. Funny thing is that EVERYONE at a table was eating the infamous pancakes. The cashier was rude...."breakfast is over--gone...departed the building. You are late!" Um...well, since I am the paying customer, I beg to differ. We walked away. I don't pass my hard earned money over to people who are unpleasant.

If you want to go local on food in DC, this is the place to be!!! Small market, delicious food, you might be a while on a line so you better get there early... but it’s worth it!!!

Its busy, food is great. One table with minimal seating, and its all communal style. So everyone sits next to each other in a TIGHT space to eat REALLY GOOD food. The pancakes are food, but the CRABCAKE BENEDICT was amazing. quick service. Not really romantic... but worth the experience.
