My partner and I had a two hour walk to the Stony Batter ruins. The tunnels are closed and only opened for special events due to safety concerns. I would say that the pathways to Hooks Bay are very poorly marked and if you try to follow DOC markers you will end up in dense bush or swamp. The views to the Coromandel are stunning.

Stoney bateer is accessed from the ring road that goes around the eastern end of Waiheke(dirt road). there is a parking lot about 20 minutes walk from the top of Stoney batter. the walk is along the road on private property, used to be open to traffic many years ago. To see the views you need to be able to walk, but you can access by wheel chair, there again you need to be fit. all on dirt road , but in good condition.

and a great walk through farmland via public access to the fortifications that were never used. We saw native birds, Took loads of photos and you can stop off at wineries and olive oil tasting places en route. The road is winding and is not sealed so your car will be covered in red dust but it is worth it. Not great though for car sickness sufferers. Wes topped at Man o'War Bay for a swim and lunch and at the winery.

Well worth the walk to get to the area
Thd surrounding views are amazing
If you go in summer make sure you go early or later in the day as it gets very warm. Tunnels not currently open but still plenty to see

You need transport to get to this location and you need to be prepared for a hike (easy) from the carpark to the site. The gun emplacements, views and rock formations are worth the walk but hopefully they will re-open the tunnels soon as exploring these would have been the icing on the cake.
