Awesome stay at Fremantle Prison YHA! I highly recommend it. I've been staying at youth hostels since the mid-90's (first as a backpacker, now with my family), and this one is the best I've ever seen. Seriously. It's amazing for a youth hostel. The setting cannot be beat--you're staying IN Fremantle Prison! Creepy and kind of awesome! Also, it's been retrofitted for backpacker and indie-traveller/indie-family comfort: free wifi, washing machines, a big and friendly common kitchen, plenty of space to hang out. My family of four stayed in one of the rooms with a double bed and a bunk bed and were comfortable--there's a mini-fridge, a TV, and space for everything.

The staff was friendly and helpful throughout our two-night, three-day stay, suggesting restaurants and tours and the like (with a smile, which you can't put a price on, eh?). Plus, the location is awesome as well (in 2018 that is, not so much if you were locked up in solitary in 1890!). Close to Fremantle Markets (5 min walk) and the downtown area (7 minute walk) and the coastline/museum area (15 minute walk/20 if you're holding a flat white and window shopping), you couldn't be more centrally located (which, again, makes historical sense). Security at night is amazing as well! (Ha ha). Don't miss staying at Fremantle YHA--it's worth your stay, individually or as a family. it was a highlight of our trip to Western Australia.

Hi Lemon - so glad you enjoyed your stay at our pretty unique hostel. As well as all the rooms inside the old prison walls (what was in fact the Women's prison area), we also have three heritage cottages outside which were former warden's cottages. They are called Fremantle Colonial Cottages, and have two bedrooms - so you might like to try one of them the next time!

Family roon with ensuite and airconditioning is good. Toast, tea and coffee provided for breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful. Clean and tidy. Book direct with YHA for cheaper price. Next to Markets and close to free buses. Do a torch light prison tour next door while you are there, quite good.

Bright, light and clean with good heating that was much needed that night. This place is different, in the old female prison, so a great novelty. It has everything you need for a longer stay, great kitchen, laundry and outdoor areas. Wifi in common areas. All clean and comfy. I would stay again. It’s great value for the price.
