“Amazing cottage, perfect location”
Reviewed 16 October 2015 for a stay in October 2015

The Old Church is a converted church, one half available as a Holiday rental with the owners living next door in the other half of the building. During our stay the owners, Kim and Stephen were away on a break of their own in England but we did not feel neglected at all, with a text from them before we arrived and a welcome note and bottle of wine on the table once there.

The cottage is huge, with high ceilings and very large rooms. The entrance hall is welcoming with somewhere to leave boots and coats and an umbrella and torches were provided should they be needed. The large lounge/diner is very well equipped with a dining table, plenty of seating, a modern flatscreen TV, VHS/DVD player and a FreeSat Satellite box with recording facility, so you can set it to record your favourite shows if you're going to be out. There's a selection of books, videos and DVDs provided too. There's a great log burner fire that takes wood or coal with initial supplies provided. The lounge leads through to a very spacious kitchen with all mod cons, including tumble dryer, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer, breakfast table and plenty of utensils, cutlery and crockery.

The hallway leads up a wooden staircase to the upper floor where there is a large master bedroom with double bed and 2 singles in the same room. There is plenty of wardrobes and another small TV and Satellite receiver for watching upstairs. Three is second twin bedroom with 2 single beds and it's own washbasin. There is a superb bathroom with bath, large walk-in shower with doors, a washbasin and toilet. Throughout the property the large church windows have been retained giving plenty of light and spacious views of the garden and surrounding area. There is also a downstairs toilet and heating is provided throughout by radiators making the cottage warm and cosy. The cottage provides free wifi, which we found very useful as the mobile phone signal could be patchy at times. The wifi speed was better than expected given the rural location.

The location couldn't be better, being along a well kept single track road (B886) with plenty of passing places. This is about 4 miles from the main A850 which leads right to nearby Dunvegan and left to Portree (about 20 miles). We used the large Co-op at Portree, just off the first roundabout you reach on the A87 as you approach Portree from the cottage. It was very good for large shop for a variety of products. It is open 7.00 till 10pm, 7 days a week. Nearer to the cottage at Dunvegan is the Fasgadh Stores, a small grocery store for essential supplies including kindling and wood logs. It is open 9 till 6.30pm 6 days a week. We ate out on occasion during the day at the Lower Deck Fish restaurant on Quay Street in Portree, which I can recommend. We dined one evening at the Old School Restaurant in Dunvegan, which was outstanding (See my review on Trip Advisor for more information). There is plenty to see and do in the area and the scenery is amazing. The cottage has a table in the hallway with lots of information leaflets on it for places to discover. We would recommend the Old Church to all and would use it again if revisiting Skye.

“Beautiful and characterful rental in a fabulous location”

We stayed Monday - Saturday and were very pleased with the quality of the facilities and our warm and helpful hosts, Stephen and Kim, who provided us with fresh eggs and useful tips. They live in the other half of the building, but this did not cause any problems for us and there was there is no noise issue, and would have been very useful if any problems had occurred. They run Wild Skye Boat trips and offer their visitors a free 2hr+ boat trip from Carbost to visit the Sea Eagles when they can, which we sadly did not have time to take up.

The accommodation suited us very well as a couple. It would also suit a small group of friends and especially suit a family. The bathroom includes a bath and separate shower and there is a second WC downstairs. There are two good sized bedrooms: a twin room and a main bedroom with a double and two single beds.
The living room includes plenty of comfy sofas and dining chairs.a video & DVD player, freeview TV with a good range of channels and an i-pod dock, plus a well stocked bookshelf with local books and novels, OS walking maps and decent selection of music, films and games.

The church is located on the very beautiful Waternish peninsula of Skye and was a very good base for exploring the northern half of Skye. Like most properties on Skye, it is accessed via a single track road, but this one was very well cared for and only 6.5 miles off the main A-road with plenty of passing places and clear views.

The beautiful waterside village of Stein is only 2.5 miles away and boasts an excellent Old Inn serving good food and drink, a highly rated seafood restaurant (Loch Bay) and a high quality Art and Craft shop, Dandelion Designs, which includes work by the very talented Liz and Carol Myhill, amongst others. Also nearby is an interesting tannery visitor centre, SkyeSkyns, and more galleries, historical locations and wonderful coastal and forestry walks.

The larger town of Dunvegan with local shops and many good cafes and restaurants is only just over 9 miles (20min) away via the main A-road (after 6.5 miles of the B886). Of particular note was the Bakery for excellent fish & chips and toasties as well as baking, and The Old Schoolhouse for something more special, and so may require booking.

Portree is roughly 23 miles (40min) away where the large Co-Op is open until 10pm and petrol seems to be cheaper, and Sligachan is just over 30miles (just under an hour) away, both via good main A-roads.

We're looking forward to returning to the Old Church in the future.
