I booked Chateau de Lauquerie for a surprise birthday holiday for my wife's 40th. 36 adults and kids all pitching up together! We secretly arranged everything with the lovely owners, Mireille and Marc, who live on site. They took a great deal of trouble to help me plan the week, arranging a hog roast, wine tasting, and cooking an excellent birthday dinner.
The Chateau itself is a very old Templar castle, set in beautiful countryside. The building was recently renovated into a big rambling house loved by grown-ups and kids alike. The house and grounds are beautifully cared for, and child safe. A few things to watch out for (like any old house) but Mireille took the kids round on the first day, and told them what they could do, and where. The rooms are lovely and there is plenty of excellent living space, with quiet corners as well. A nice outdoor heated swimming pool, tennis court etc so lots to do. We have some wonderful memories, and would love to return some day.
Downsides were all minor for us: 1. wifi in only one living room but the ipad addicts managed ok; 2. we loved having the owners nearby but not everyone wants that 3. a lot of organising to manage a big group with cooking and tidying etc but that applies to any large group holiday rental
