Tips when visiting the Muriwai Gannet Colony:

1. Plan ahead and go on a good day so you get the best views of the birds.
2. There's a little walk before reaching the viewing decks. On a rainy day, this can get a little bit muddy.
3. Bring you cameras, you would want to immortalize this.
4. If you have time, spend some time at the beach side.
5. Be ready for amazing views and sounds of nature!

Went here to photograph the gannet colony and wasn't disappointed. To get good shots of the gannets you'll need at least a 300mm lens; bigger if you want some close ups. The birds are nesting at the moment so they are static on the ground and easy to photo. I went at the weekend and it was busy but not packed out. During the week you'd probably have the place to yourself. Highly recommended!

The beach was super beautiful matched with the black shining sands . Amazing place. People were reading, surfing and walking around there. Impressed me.

Visiting the Gannet Colony at Muriwai Beach and Maukatia Bay is an unforgettable experience. The perfect place to experience the West Coast's charmingly beautiful and rough character. The wildlife is stunning. The gannet colony is only one of 3 in New Zealand, and out of those the most accessible one in the country. It does get very busy in summer, well after all who wouldn't want to experience nature at its rawest beauty. If you're visiting the area, make sure you do not miss out visiting the gannets. The gannets come here in spring to bring up their new babes, and leave for Australia in Winter. But even if only few gannets are around in Winter, there's still a few... and you may be lucky and spot some other stunning seabirds, seals, little blue penguins or Maui Dolphins.

We came here mainly to see the black sand beach, but we stuck around and took some of the trails as well. The cliffs and trails were great and I was surprised how interesting it was to see the huge Gannet colony here. There were so many birds in such a relatively small area and the information signs were quite educational as well.
