The district museum is very thorough in covering all things Arrowtown. All the crafts, baking, brewing, blacksmithing, mining, etc are all covered in this museum. It doesn't look as large outside as it really is. We were incredibly impressed with what is collected and displayed to represent this town and region from the Maori arriving through the European arrivals through the gold rush and moving into current times. Excellent artifacts. However, the most exciting thing we saw was the first exhibition of Frank Varsanyi's "Tribal Warriors" 48 Handmade heads, torsos and full life figures of the world's Tribal Warriors - Head Dresses, Weapons and Jewelry sourced from around the world. This exhibit ends 31 Jan 2018.

We found this museum to be well worth the visit and highly recommend it, especially with children. It is very informative and educational on the pioneering/goldrush history of Arrowtown. Kids loved it. Allow about 90mins. Great bookshop. Very friendly staff.

Unfortunately we arrived near closing time could have spent much longer looking around this museum. Working in a hospital I found the old operating instruments very interesting.

We are fortunate that those medical instruments were donated to the museum by a local Doctor. Some of them are a bit frightening aren't they!
We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit.

It looks tiny but there is a lot to read and see on the inside. We didn't leave enough time to do this little museum justice. Well worth the visit tho.

One of the most frequent comment we get from our guests is that the museum is much bigger than expected! We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit.

The museum was filled with a lot of history, providing a nice balance of artifacts and verbiage to read. Don't miss the downstairs "village" including an outhouse (be sure to go in!). It takes approximately 1.5-2 hours to do it justice but I highly recommend it as you learn a lot about the area's history.
