The passion our guide felt for this place was palpable. I loved learning about the printing process, as well as how the leather covers were made. The flowers and fruit trees are exquisite and a cute snack shop at the end made this an experience.
We appreciate your comments on our great guides. Thank you
Lynette was an excellent tour guide. It was very interesting to visit this site and see how the printing system worked when the Marist brothers came to nz. Work a visit and not expensive either. Worth a visit when in Russell.
Thank you for your positive affirmation of our highly skilled and passionate Guides.
A very informative visit showing printing and tanning methods still being carried out today. The press is from France and bought out by French brothers under Bishop Pompallier. The rammed earth building is built in typical French peasant style. You even get a chance to make a print. I loved learning of all the phrases we use today that came from the printing profession.
Been here when the building was presented as a homestead....now in it original form as show piece of a working tannery and printing press, it is all that more interesting for the true history of Russell
Very interesting tour of the binary. Learnt lots about making books. Croissants and coffee very good at the cafe also.
My companions didn't fancy a visit around the property; their reason was they aren't interested in religion. I think it was a glimpse of the gardens from the entrance that made me buy a ticket for the guided tour.
We assembled in the gardens which were pretty enough. Our guide gave a background to the setting up of the mission by Bishop Pompallier which although interesting for me was secondary to the informative talk about the actual use of the property as a print works I particularly liked the fact that the French Bishop did a deal with an Irish man (Catholic naturally) in order to get covers for his books!
Definitely worth a visit I just wish I hadn't needed to dash off after the 45minute tour when the Guide left everyone to potter about the gardens....
