We have been to this place a number of times since moveing to Nelson. Mostly just fior a drink and some tapas. We just love it. The service is great. The food even better. We love sitting outside on the street and watching the world go by.

Absolutely delicious food, thoughtfully prepared! The owner was all present, preparing in the open kitchen, serving and checking with guests that all was well.

A night out with family and we thought we would try Cafe Max for the first time. We were not disappointed. It is a very busy place (a good sign) and reservations are recommended.

The welcome was very good and once seated the service was excellent. There is a good selection of tapas and the platters looked so good (next time).

We had a selection of 10 tapas dishes and none disappointed. My favourite was the leak and blue cheese tart and the monk fish.

Overall an excellent evening and reasonably priced. The service at all stages was very good and the general friendliness of all the staff was nice.

We will be back!

Planned to go to this restaurant as we were based at Nelson during or 3 week tour of the South Island.

Called ahead to check if booking was necessary but told just turn up.

Turned up and once greeted we were asked to wait a while to see if a table was available????

Once seated we had a look through the menu which was okay but a little unclear.

Waitress advised four Tapas would normally eat good for two people.

Lamb, Chorizo, chicken and spicy Pattaya’s bravado .

When the food arrived was disappointed to see that every dish came on a bed of patatas bravas if this had been made clear by the waitress we would have not ordered a full dish of potatoes.

As mentioned meat dishes were ok but the chorizo dish was a train wreck. 2 to 3 inches long and as tough as old boots, my wife who is Spanish found them inedible.

The food we left was a concern to the waitress but we did not want it as a takeout and did not want it replaced.

Not the best meal while in Nelson and the service was average.

Dear Sir. Thank you for your visit and comment. We will be reviewing the issues that you've raised. Some fair some unfair: Yes, sometimes you have to see if a table is available, specially on a busy night. What for some customers could be a problem (patatas in some dishes) for others is a plus. Yes, the chorizo is NZ made since available spanish is expensive and not better than the local one that we use (I'm from Spain).

the food here was amazing, we shared a platter mix of lots of different dishes and everything was good. i would definitely recommend going here for dinner. (the only reason i didnt give 5 stars is they didnt have any Rioja wine) the staff were great our order got mixed up and so our food took quite a long time to arrive.... however the staff were extremely apologetic and they even gave us free dessert to make up for the wait, this showed they care about there customers and the experience they have. i will come here again :)
