The Carthusian monastery was founded in 12th centuary. It was built by monks from Grande Chantreuse in France. There were built two monasteries, the uper one where monks lived in the stricts rules and lover one in Špitalič village where monks also work as craftmen and support uper monastery.

Very interesting display of the life of monks. The recorder story is very picturesque and you basically get the idea of the way they lived hundreds of years ago.

Žička kartuzija is one of the most interesting medieval ruins (from 12. century) in Slovenia. It has just some special attractions for tourists in the huge complex. First, left to the entrance, is small museum. Second obligatory spot for a visit are preserved walls of the church, third shop with tea and fourth partly reconstructed defense walls and towers. You can rest near the entrance in local inn with some medieval decorations and food. Check the timetable before your visit. They close early during the winter.

The monastery is interesting to wander around, part of it is well preserved, inside are also ruins of older structures you can explore. Entrance fee is a bit expensive if you only want to look around the grounds shortly, but does include entrance to the museum as well.

At the entrance there is a bar with a terrace, apparently one of the oldest bars in slovenia. The terrace is a nice place to have a drink with a great view of the monastery and surroundings, and does not require an entrance ticket since it's just outside the actual monastery.

Zička kartuzija is a nice visiting spot. We were given audio guides that had a very extensive selection of topics covering the monastery, including the daily life, food and history of the monastery.
