We drove up and parked and could already spot seals on the beach and in the water. Be careful at getting too close as some are more territorial than others. One who appeared to be sleeping suddenly rose and gave a short chase. Best of all, there was no charge to come take a look at the seals.

Well worth a visit to this seal colony. Nice big carpark and public toilets. This is the start of the Kaikoura Peninsula walkway.
As soon as we arrived we saw seals sleeping on rocks and even the wooden pathway next to the carpark. They are not bothered by the cars or people taking photos of them.
There is an information board which tells you not to get too close so we gave them plenty of space but were still able to get up close to watch the seals and take photos of them.

A lovely spot, but look out for the seals. Look carefully and they are there! They are very used to people and tolerant of them. It is disappointing to see people continually get too close to get that selfie. The are great to look out in their environment. A well organised area to view.

We wondered along late afternoon to look for the seals. Sadly there were none around so we were a little disappointed and then one turned up and was amazing to watch for at least half an hour. I imagine if you were lucky to loads of seals this would be amazing sadly we just timed it badly.

Winter time, strong wind, able to see around 10 seals laying down on the rocky beach. Good photo spot, great view of the ocean and snow capped mountains as backdrop. Ohau Point is inaccessible due to road construction, this is the only place in Kaikoura to see seals for now (June 2017). A couple tried to picnic there, things were blown away by the strong wind.
