I have been a birdwatcher and wildlife photographer of over forty years. The wildlife encounter from kaikoura is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I hope that it can resume soon after the challenges from the most recent earthquake in the area. Best wishes to the great team there.

Do both this and the dolphin encounter (if you are a comfortable snorkeler) while you are in Kaikoura, I promise you won't be disappointed. We did both in the same day due to weather constraints and loved both tours. The albatross encounter is a much more passive tour but we saw tons of bird and marine life and had the bonus of having a large blue shark come up to the chum block in the middle of the albatross. If you tend towards seasickness I suggest taking medicine a few hours prior or placing a scopolamine patch the night before.

If you are a bird nerd like we are, you will absolutely love the Albatross Encounter tour. Species which are rare all around the world gathered within only a few meters from our boat. WOW! If you are not a bird nerd, you'll be entertained by the wild show beneath your eyes and get to see wild marine bird interact in their natural environment like never before. Worth every penny!

After a side trip to rescue a Hutton's Shearwater running down SH1, we boarded Encounter 2 at South Bay, and sped out to the Kaioura underwater canyon, liberating the Hutton's on the way. Tracy, our skipper and guide put out a bag of chum, and the birds gathered round - petrels, giant and smaller, a variety of albatrosses, buller's shearwaters and smaller birds. It was magical. Tracy identified them for us, told us about them, and pointed out their distinctive features. We went to 3 different locations to see a variety of birds. An extra bonus was dolphins jumping in our wake as we returned to base.
Only grumble was being told to report a 5:50 am, and then waiting for over 10 minutes in the dark before the office opened.

We left from South Bay that is being extensively renovated with Gary our skipper and guide for the afternoon it was amazing the birds were fantastic the wandering Albatross was really unusual, we then went near some large rocks and there 6 baby fur seals learning to swim in a pool set into the rock then the final icing on the cake on the way home was to see some He toes Dolphins! All in all an exceptional trip with an exceptional guide on Gary.
