Wilderness Trail Shuttle needs to take a trip to Central Otago and observe how some of the cycle/shuttle companies operate on the Otago Rail Trail. They have it down to a fine art.
First, while we were told by the isite at Hokitika, about four weeks before our cycle tour , that we would hear from this recommended shuttle company 'in due course', the reality was that by the afternoon before we started, we had not heard from them at all. As we were staying on the west coast where there is limited cellphone coverage, we had to make a special trip to a cafe at Charleston, where there was reception, to ring the company. A woman answered "hello". I had to ask if we had indeed got the correct number for the shuttle company. After confirming that it was, she looked on their computer and confirmed our booking, saying that Chris the owner would contact us that night. We pointed out we would be out of range by then, back at our accommodation . Chris phoned us next day while we were on the road to Greymouth. This is the morning of our intended trip - our first voice contact. We were apprehensive, by this stage, because it appeared that Chris was not going to be able to meet us, but instead was leaving our bikes at a motor camp south of Greymouth (so we did not technically start the trail). Again, this was unsatisfactory, after having experienced the quality of personal service at the start (and the free car parking facilities), when doing the Otago Rail Trail earlier in the year. While Chris attempted to specify a time to meet us, it did not suit us - and it was now way too late to be negotiating it. As my partner pointed out to him, we could have been driving from Nelson that day. Chris appeared to have several other bookings and was understaffed. Also it felt like he may have overlooked our booking until the last minute, because it was done through the i site.
We left our car at the camp ground and paid a daily fee to do so. Chris obviously does not have car storage facilities in Greymouth but apparently has a base in Hokitika. Had we known this originally, we would have asked the i site to book us with a company based in Greymouth, with car park facilities.
The friendly motor camp owner helped us get the bikes' panniers set up - no helpful video at the start, as with the Otago rail trail, and certainly no bike mechanic to check seat height, bike suitability, etc - then we were left to change into our bike gear in the camp toilet block.
We cycled that day to Kumara, only to find our bags had not arrived at our hotel. A man phoned us to apologise, stating he was helping Chris out. While this wait for our clothes was not a major inconvenience, (he arrived about an hour later) it was typical of the disorganization of this company. We had to tell him where we were staying, as he did not know our address. At the end of the trail an older man picked us up, and took us to the Greymouth motor camp, as Chris was again busy. This older helper was friendly and interesting, as he had lived in Westland for many years.
While other wilderness trail shuttle clients appear to have experienced excellent personal service from Chris, even to the extent of having him accompany them at the start of the cycle trail for several kilometers, this was not our experience. We cannot recommend this company.

Hi Julie
Yes I am as disappointed as you about the events at the start of your trip. You had expectations about the way the trip would be delivered and unfortunately these were not met. I have reviewed the way my company does business with Hokitika I-Site and put in place a number of measures to ensure that when they are the lead agents on a booking then they communicate precisely to their clients what has been agreed. In your case this was not done and it has lead to this outcome. If your memory serves you rightly we did go out of our way during your ride to ensure you were fully informed on each day to the point that we completely changed things on the last day when there was adverse weather. This ensured you had a much better experience than if we had stuck to the original itinerary. I would also like to point out that the "helpers" you continually refer to are in fact professional drivers employed by Wilderness Trail Shuttle. They are locals and yes they do have great stories to tell and they definitely represent the hospitality that the region is famous for.
We have been operating on this trail for 6 seasons now and my business has a reputation for reliability and going out of its way to ensure riders have a great experience when they are here. If things aren't right then we will put it right. I am sorry we aren't up to Otago Rail Trail standards in your eyes.

Wow! What a great team. We arrived much earlier than expected for our shuttle back to Greymouth but there was no problem. We were shown to changing cubicles to change out of our wet gear. Chris the driver was out but the two men working there were chatty and very passionate about bikes. As soon as Chris knew we were there he organised to pick us up sooner. Chris is a super helpful and friendly guy and we wouldn’t hesitate using his service again or recommending him to others.
He also wrote the very informative book “A Guide to the West Coast Wilderness Trail” which is well worth buying.

Thanks to Chris at Wilderness Trail Shuttle we had a brilliant one day ride through forest, old gold diggings and alongside spectacular lakes and rivers. His advice and support was excellent and the bikes were well maintained and appropriate for the ride conditions. Highly recommended.
