An absolutely fabulous cafe, staff are always friendly and greet with a grin. The food here is freshly prepared in house with local ingredients, and tastes delicious! Their pies are quite easily the best in Whangarei, the pastry is crunchy and the fillings are delightful - an extensive range for vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters.

Four of us stopped by the Handsome Frog mid-morning today. We were greeted with smiles and seated inside as the wind was starting to rise outside.
None of us had had breakfast so we were fairly peckish. However we were spoilt for choice from the delicious menu. In the end Velda plumped for mince on bread - a reminder of her childhood in S Africa, Diane the Eggs Benedict (hollandaise was the best she'd ever had) and both Nigel and I opted for the the Brisket Pie. 3 coffees and a pot of tea completed the order.
As we tucked into our excellent meals we enjoyed the eclectic mix of music being played and the relaxed ambiance of the establishment.
We left 40 minutes later nicely filled and and wonderfully relaxed. Our only regret was we didn't have space for any of the lovely looking cakes on display. Thoroughly recommend you seek out the Frog and give it a kiss.

The Handsome Frog is tucked away close to the railway line and opposite the Grand Hotel but is well worth finding. It is small and unpretentious but with a surprisingly varied menu of fresh food and very friendly service. Breakfast may be the best option when you can enjoy good coffee and amazing pancakes served with fresh fruit and lemon yogurt, to mention only one of many options. They also serve a wide variety of delicious home-made pies to eat in the café or to take away for later. Good value for money and highly recommended.

Whilst at the market we saw a sign for the Handsome Frog Cafe and decided to check it out for coffee. What an amazing cafe, great atmosphere and buzzy without being loud. We sat outside and the service was very friendly and welcoming. If you want delicious homemade and largely organic free range food all created onsite then this is the place for you. We found the quality excellent, the portions generous and the prices very reasonable. They have a great range of artisan sourdough breads and large pies made from scratch, an assortment of cakes and made to order meals. We drank delicious organic coffee which we were told is is locally roasted and the baklava looked amazing but we couldn’t resist the homemade doughnuts with fillings of apple cinnamon, lemon curd and cream caramel - decadent but so delicious. We were so impressed we made a point of meeting the proud owner chefs Janet & Ian to say thank you for supporting local . We wholeheartedly recommend this quality cafe and it’s a great addition to Whangarei.

My mum and I were drawn to the cafe because of the feel of it, the presentation of the food and the owners who were so natural, welcoming and friendly. I am not one for organic coffee, however this coffee I wanted more. We had the spinach and feta parcel and the tomato relish. What a taste bud explosion and sensation. The clean, healthy incredibly flavoursome food just left me wanting more and more. The tomato relish was so chunky, tasty and homemade. We were so impressed we bought their pies, which they bake on site, to take home. Wow, home cooking and then some, the most amazing tasting food with a home cooking approach and feel, it was incredible. You HAVE TO GO

Dear Melinda
Thank you for your wonderfull review. What you described is exactly what we are trying to achieve. Thank you so much fro appreciating what we are attempting to do.
Our café is an extension of our home, partly as we spend so much time there. We are wanting people to come and enjoy our hospitality and relax in our extended home lounge.

If you ever pass through your town again please call in and introduce your self.
