The guy on reception said it all when he said " some people are disappointed "
The old accommodation part is used for a few itinerant workers and so we were given a room in the 1970's extension ..Small a little rundown and depressed like the rest of the place. Like an old motel room .
I think that is were I got a lot of bites from Bed Bugs .. they showed prominently a day later and were with me all my trip (the bites not the bugs) .
WE ate elsewhere as they place was virtually deserted ..and did not fancy eating there.
The breakfast was just adequate and very limited tea and toast. extra for anything else. and as dated as the hotel...
The staff lady who replenished the food at breakfast was friendly .. one of the only positive notes ..
I do not Recommend
B

Room Tip: Stay some place else ...motel would even be better

Thank you for your review. We go to great lengths keeping our beds fresh and clean, the beds are also serviced with clean linen daily from a professional linen service. I can assure you our hotel does not possess bed bugs. The old hotel is enjoyed by many guests and has recently undergone a refurbishment. Yes our free contential breakfast is adequate and yes your are able to purchase other cooked items. Unfortunately a scroll on the grass could of also generated some pest bites. Kind regards, The Grand Hotel

We arrived late at night driving from Waitomo, and the hotel has staff at reception till 11pm. Our room was on the 3rd floor, no problem though with an elevator. The room was quite small and there was no air-conditioner, beware to open the terrace door as insects will join you in the room. Free breakfast was simple but nice to have. Cost is low compared to other New Zealand cities and towns so didn't expect much.

Thanks for your review. Wanganui is no different to any other town regarding insects but within the CBD this is not normally an issue for our hotel. Our rooms are equiped with fans. Glad you enjoyed your breakfast. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip. Kind regards, The Grand Hotel

Lovely old hotel in great location. Arrived early and were able to get into room which was in the newer part of the building. Room was adequate for our one night stay. Shops nearby, Nice meal in the pub, good choice of food and good prices. Continental breakfast included. Overall really happy with our stay, very friendly staff.

We spent one night here on our road trip of NZ - it is very cheap so we weren't expecting much - the staff were friendly - the hotel is rather shabby and breakfast was very basic. It was fine for one night but I wouldn't want to stay here much longer. The internet had a very poor signal

Thank you for writing a review. Our hotel was built in 1927. We take great pride as loving custodians of the hotel. We are constandly renewing and reburbishing the property. Our hotel is built with reinforced concrete. There are one or two wifi spots with weak signal but we are constantly working to improve this also. Kind regards, The Grand Hotel

We do enjoy our trips to Wanganui. Rooms lovely and clean super hot showers. Great food. We love the steaks. Excellent staff who are always very helpful. All round exceptional value for money in a great location. We enjoy the history of the building together with modern conveniences.

Room Tip: In the summer the balcony rooms are nice as you can sit outside also like room 108 and the suites. Lift access is a bonus.
