Newcastle Art Gallery is definitely worth a visit. You'll be surprised at what you might find on display. The Newcastle Regional Gallery has a wide range of art works in their collection - early landscapes of Newcastle attributed to Joseph Lycett, as well as works by Whiteley, Dobell and Olley.

Spent 2 days in Newcastle so made the most of available time to discover the sights and attractions of this very nice town on the coast which is about a 2 1/2 hr drive out of Sydney. Newcastle is very much a city to be walked and discovered.
This Gallery was hosting some works from its collection “shades of grey” and a retrospective of “interior landscapes” by Elizabeth Cummings. Her work was mostly large paintings, photos and ceramics. Bold contemporary work - sensitive use of colour and very pleasing to my eyes. Loved the work which was on display on 1st floor.
The works from the gallery collection were mainly on ground floor and although more somber stirred up moods and emotional responses due to predominate use of grey color. Also liked this work.
Entry is free.......
Nice “gift” merchandise at counter
Exhibitions change regularly and going by their brochure some major work makes it to this gallery
Ie “The Archibald” - works from Australia’s richest portraiture art competitions
I believe they also have artist talks, guilted tours for exhibitions and on
Weekends run programs for children
Some outdoor sculptures and in Civic Park the Capt Cook Memorial Fountain
Enjoyed the art and my visit to this gallery

When I was 8, I gazed in awe at a Fred Williams landscape, as a teenager I gazed in awe at a kinetic art exhibition (even before Star Wars) and 30 years on I kept coming back to the Gallery every time I return to Newcastle for a visit. I'm still on that journey of discovery, learning and appreciation as art influences my being. With the exception of a twenty year absence, this fantastic place has enriched me for thirty years of my time on planet earth.

This gallery has an excellent collection and many great travelling exhibitions as well. It's right in the centre of Newcastle, minutes' walk from Darby St an always a pleasure to walk around. From contemporary to modern and back again, the shows are always worth a look.

This is one of the best Galleries to visit and its even better on the last Friday of the month when they open late have the most amazing displays of art on show. I saw Dobell, Whitely, Smart, Bunny, Streeton, Beckett... just to name a few. All alongside staff eager to assist with information on the artists. Do yourself a favour and make sure you visit this Gallery.
