Cute charming and no motel vibes

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Jan 2024via mobile
It was the cutest little “motel” we have stayed. The room was beutiful overlooking the lake. We had the first floor room and had a great view. The name motel only applies to the fact that we could see where we parked our car. However it felt more luxurious when you got inside. Comfortable bed, clean linens and very cute little kitchen. The lady at the front desk was wonderful and gave us plenty of Great tips where to eat. We hope to visit again one day and stay again

We loved the location as the apartment was right next to the lake and a 5 min walk to the Main Street and about 10 min walk to a large playground. We stayed 2 nights and our kids were at the playground daily.
The rooms were large and beds / pillows were the most comfy in our entire NZ trip. I absolutely loved the water pressure in the shower, didn’t want to get out.
Staff was welcoming and told us where to go and where to eat upon check in.
    Highly recommend.

    Dear Karen

Thank you for much for your kind words and reviewing your stay with us, so pleased you enjoyed our location, comfort and advise. The playground is a hit with the younger ones, the flying fox is a favourite and so handy to wander down and spend time letting the children run about. We enjoy helping our guests with recommendations of places to eat, walks and different sights to see along the Milford Road to make your stime in Te Anau memorable. Your family was a delight to host and I trust you are enjoying some family time over this break. Happy New Year and Kindest Regards Kerri and Steve.

A most wonderful establishment indeed. The accommodations were fantastic. Beautifully designed, everything was of very high quality, yet the atmosphere was cosy and comfortable. Keri, our host, has thought of her guest’s comfort and needs - if I thought I needed something, i just looked for it and there it was. She is also an excellent advisor; she told us to leave for our Milford Sound adventure earlier that we had planned - good thing we listened to her or else we would have missed many wonderful sights along the way. Her restaurant recommendations were also spot on. Without hesitation we would return to stay at Radfords. Beautiful setting as well.

The room was very nice with a separate living area/kitchenette. The bathroom was pretty large and had a nice large tub/shower. The bedroom had a shelf for putting your luggage which was nice. The car park was right in front of the room. The receptionist was very friendly and helpful with recommendations for activities and restaurants during our stay.

In my opinion it's more like Radfords NEAR (not "on") the Lake because it is not lakefront but rather a 2-3 minute walk. Other than that, it's a small town and this is a convenient location for walking to everything - and it doesn't seem like there are really any hotels that are actually lakefront. The biggest negative in my opinion is the value for the money. We paid $346 USD for a night for non-lakefront - compared to our prior stay at Seascape Accommodations at Kaka Point for $97 USD for an oceanview room practically right on the beach. And our next stop in Queenstown we paid $311 USD/night at The Rees Luxury 5-star hotel with true lakefront rooms with a balcony overlooking Lake Wakatipo - and The Rees included breakfast, Radfords on the Lake does not. Comparing to those it just wasn't the same value, but maybe Te Anau is just a more expensive place.

There is a Booking FAQ question where someone says breakfast is provided for an extra fee but that is incorrect. You must pick one of the 2-3 cafes in town and go early and/or prepare to wait.

Also, at Te Anau but really all of New Zealand, it is ESSENTIAL to reserve your table for restaurants because they get booked up and even if not, some of them didn't really seem to appreciate taking walk-ins.

Room tip: In Te Anau as well as all NZ, reserve your restaurant tables!!! They get booked often and even if not, several didn't appreciate walkins.

Dear Darren, Thank you for staying with us and reviewing your stay here. We are pleased you enjoyed the amenities of your room, our service and recommendations. Thank you for your feedback and we appreciate all feedback, we are 60 metres from the Lake with only the road between our property and the water, you were here in high season and being so sersonal our rates are higher for this reason.

We do offer a Continental Breakfast delivered to the room the evening prior but also tell guests about some exceptional cafes that do cooked breakfast and great coffee too. You are certainly correct in advising guests to pre-book dinners in our town as our pre arrival email suggests, with a list of recommendations to book online to avoid disappointment on arrival.

We hope you have enjoyed your time in Fiordland and wish you safe travels. Kindest Regards Kerri and Steve

I can see that the management team takes pride in managing the property. It is very clean and well maintained. The location is good. Opposite the lake. Walkable to all amenities. We took an evening walk along the lake while the kids played at Lion Park. I love this place. Definitely recommended.
