Our overnight trip with Real Journeys to Doubtful Sound has to be one of the highlights of our NZ holiday. We’d heard about how beautiful the Sounds were and decided we preferred Doubtful over Milford, with the latter feeling more touristy and commercial. We took a 4-man bunk which was all that was left despite it being a couple of months before we were due to travel, and which was just as well because other options would probably have been expensive for the 4 of us any case. My expectations of the bunk were pretty low but in fact I was proven totally wrong as it was a great set up and we had a very comfortable nights sleep. As for the rest of the trip it was quite simply awesome. We loved dawn and dusk especially, the moodiness of the weather which changed so quickly, the rainbows, the waterfalls, the landscape, the wildlife, the tranquility. I guess there is a dependency on the weather and it might not have been the same experience in torrential rain and fog, but that would be seriously unlucky and the rapidly changing weather of our trip actually made it what it was and I wouldn’t have changed a single bit of it. Real Journeys looked after us very well indeed on a nice boat and with good food and hot drinks on tap. Great people in both the staff and other guests and I so wish we could do it all over again.

We went on the winter overnight cruise, we had two days of the most magical weather, the crew of Dave the skipper and Jenz the chef could not have been more helpful. Mandy managed all the bookings.
OK. So if you want a 5 star cruise go to "The Med" and you can be pampered and cajoled till your hearts content.
If you want to travel to one of the most breathtaking places I've ever seen then go with Fiordland Expeditions.
If you want Lobster within hours of being caught, fresh line caught Blue Cod, Kayaking and a general sense of satisfaction and peace then do this.
If it does rain, well the waterfalls are going to look awesome.
Bring a sense of humour, adventure and interact with the other guest.
This is one of those places that you may only get to once, do it with these guys. Thanks Mandy, Dave and Jenz

I took the day trip sponsored by Real Journeys. The trip was run well except for acquiring the lunch which was totally disorganized and of poor quality. The best part of the boat journey in Doubtful Sound was when they turned off the boat engine and we got to experience the silence punctuated only by the sound of the waterfalls. I would recommend this trip to anyone visiting New Zealand, especially if your time is limited.

We did the overnight on board the @realjourneys ship and had the most incredible experience. I can't recommend this amazing place highly enough...just don't miss it! We travelled around this area for 2 weeks and each corner just kept on delivering more mind blowing scenery than the last....Doubtful Sound was the highlight our visit.

It takes a long time to reach doubtful sound, so make sure you plan your trip well, especially when you are driving to Te anu from queenstown. Once you get there you still have to park your car which is a up the hill, and then you climb down from there to get your tickets and get into the ferry. The ferry was about to leave and they had already closed the gates when we hurried into the boat. So it began, the journey to doubtful sound.
They first take you on a ferry across to another island where you get down and find a bus waiting for you, the ferry journey is a rough half an hour, the bus ride is twisty and turny with a dense cover of forest around. The ride lasts for a good one hour which 3-4 stops in between to enjoy the view and take good photographs.
Then begins the main event of doubtful sound. As soon as the ferry starts you will be awed at the giant mountains that surround you, it is nature at its best and you will stay in awe for most of the ride.
We saw 3 arms of doubtful sound, which according to the host were bigger than milford sound, less crowded and commercial too.
It was a very long day which started at 7 in the morning and we finished doubtful sound by 4 after which the ride back to queenstown was another two hour or so. But we were happy we did it.
