The people in New Zealand turned a cancelled couch trip to Milford Sound, due to avalanche threat, into the most exhilarating and scenic vista I could have experienced.
Our day trip by couch was cancelled the night before. We took the tour bus from Queensland to Te Anau anyway in case conditions changed. When we arrived the couch driver said he was going to Milford Sound, but he didn't have any available seats for us. He then calls his friend Sean and finds that he is making a supply run with his plane . We asked if we could cop-a-hop with him and he was more than accommodating.
Our driver, who was supposed to take us to the hotel, said he would take us to the airport then deliver our luggage to the hotel while we were gone.
Twenty minutes later we were airborne and flying over the most beautiful scenery I have ever experienced in my life. I helped Sean unload supplies at the airport in Milford Sound and he took us on a walking tour of the Sound. On the return we flew over Doubtful Sound.
The cost of the flight was $250.00 less than if we continued with the couch tour (which was reimbursed), by the way, the couch which was supposed to try to make it to Milford Sound had to cancel due to the avalanche threats still in effect.
When we returned Sean volunteered to take us to the hotel and gave us pointers on where to dine in the city. Our luggage was in our room and no one asked for a tip (I had to give one anyway; this was too great an experience not to show gratitude for all of their efforts).
