Epic trip! Fabulous opportunity to experience a real Kiwi adventure from kayaking round beautiful scenery in magnificent fiord, to setting up your very own tent and sleeping overnight in a beautiful rain forest, listening to the rain on the roof and the native birds. Go Orange provide excellent clothing and gear to keep you warm and comfortable. We had a mixed bag of weather from rain and cold wind to flat waters sun and heat, so really experienced first hand Fiordland conditions. Our Guide Ollie was extremely experienced, knowledgable and upbeat. He balanced ensuring everyone had a great informative fun time witg keeping everyone safe and on track. Even with a vast range of kayaking experience amongst the group, Ollie welcomed the challenge. Thoroughly recommend this trip, bring a positive can do attitude and you will get the most out of this experience.

Kayaking in Doubtful Sound was beautiful. The ride to get there was also quite something, with passionate staff on both the buses and boat. The rainy weather was not a problem. and we were kitted out with everything needed so our own clothes stayed dry. Had a bit of a rough ride coming back in but the instructors guided us through the whole way. Great day out and a story to tell too!

So to start with, we were exceptionally lucky. The weather across NZ right now is terrible and on the proceeding days the kayaking had been cancelled due to winds. Just bare this in mind, if you have doubts call Go Orange and they will rearrange for you otherwise you might have to do the Doubtful Sound cruise instead.

We arrived at a flooded port and were told the kayaking was going ahead (yay). Our instructor was Alex, a cheerful chap who inspired confidence from the start and we set off on a boat across the lake.

Skipping to the kayaks...

We were provided with thick gear for battling the tough weather which included long John's, fleece, overalls and a life jacket. The kayaks were all tandem and we were each assigned a buddy, I was with Alex.

We set out into the Sound and Alex showed us the beautiful sights and provided us with interesting information on wildlife, the natural environment and legends of the fiords.

On the way back in the weather got challenging but Alex remained calm and cool, he then guided us back to shore ensuring that we enjoyed the remainder of the trip but also made sure that we were all safe.

Despite the weather it was an amazing day and would recommend to everyone

WOW Martyn, sounds like you had a great time on your kayaking adventure, our guides are some of the best and we are very grateful you felt you got the best out of your experience.
You are right about the weather we really haven't had a very good run, so glad you got to go out.
Thanks for your feedback

Did this tour with Go Orange for the second time ( after 10 years with another company) and must say that gladly kayaking in Doubtful sound remains a highlight of New Zealand. The group was small ( 8) , they provided clear explanations and comments of the area and the kayaking material ( and clothes provided) were of great standards. Everything on time( boat trip over the lake, bus over Wilmot pass and kayak) and we enjoyed every moment with our great professional guides OJ and "Nachos". Couldn't have had better guides for an adventure like this. Passionate about kayaking and Fiordland .

Yes we love our guides passion for kayaking and the beautiful Fiords, it really does shine through in your review. Very happy to hear you come back and still enjoyed it as much as you did 10 years ago.

Weather wasn't great when we were there. So we decided not to do the 4 hour kayak, but the 2 hour and cruise instead. Great choice as we had great weather at the start which turned windy, cloudy and rainy towards the end of the kayak trip.
The kayak guides were informative and funny. We had a great time on the water.
You can buy some nice food on the cruise and enjoy the fjord both inside or outside.
