We spent two days on an overnight trip in Doubtful Sound. We were extremely lucky with the weather, having the first two consecutive sunny days of the season! Our guide, Mop was fantastic, and balanced our mixed experience group well. We were fortunate enough to spot a group of little blue penguins, and heard kiwis calling to each other at night. The weather was warm, and we were able to go swimming at lunch time and in the evening from our beachside campsite.

The gear were given was more than adaquete, and of reasonable quality. Had it been cold, the wetsuit, fleece and cag, would all of been useful, as it was I just used the provided thermal top and my own leggings. It is company policy that as a minimum you wear a thermal top and bottoms, if you think you will react to the woolly top they provide bring your own! I'd also advise brining your own thermal bottoms as these aren't provided on the multi day options. The tent and sleeping mats are also of excellent quality.

A word to the wise - if you don't have a midge net hat, it is worth buying one, as well as brining along some decent repellent! The sandflys here could give scotlands midges a run for thier money!

The skippers in the ferry ride over Lake Manapouri were also excellent, providing a running commentary of the area and its history. On the homeward journey the skipper used some extra time we had to get a little closer to the shore showing us some interesting rock features and "refrigerator gully".

We also did a cruise in Milford, and if you have to choose, go for doubtful sound - it was far quieter, we barely saw anyone for the whole two days we were there!

Our only regret is not being able to stay for longer!

Thanks for the fantastic review. We're happy to hear the weather lived up to your expectations, along with our passionate guide offering a genuine enthusiastic service to the group. We tailor the kayaking to the groups ability on the day which makes it a personal experience. It's always lucky when you are greeted with the opportunity to spot the beautiful wildlife that Doubtful has to offer, with the rare kiwi being a unique treat for the overnighter! We understand the importance of providing a high standard of gear for the trip. The sandflies are certainly one of Fiordland's wonders that we can't control...so make sure you're prepared for them! The ferry across from Manapouri is an experience in itself and a great way to relax and enjoy the scenery before and after the adventurous paddling. Doubtful Sound is often favoured over Milford, as it is 10 x the size of Milford and much more peaceful - at least the memories will last a lifetime :)

Just got back from an awesome 2 night trip. Our guide Jon was excellent, with classic kiwi wit. The scenery was sublime and Jon really knew his stuff explaining geological features, flora and fauna, this made the experience much more imersive. The camp ground was stunningly situated and more luxurious than imagined (it's no hotel but there is a tarp and fly net to eat under!). Having being a kayak instructor in the uk I can highly recommend this company for professional competency. They always matched weather with group ability, the gear they provided was warm and comfy and choice of boat was excellent, both stable and fast. Overall this was a great adventure and is directly related to go oranges choice in staff all guides we met were cool characters.

Our two hour drive up from Te Anau wasn't as grim as you might fear, with stunning views and nuggets of info from the mic'd-up driver.
The pre-paddle info was more detailed than some we've experienced and plenty welcome for newbies or those (like us) with limited experience. The weather was cool, to say the least, there was still snow on the higher peaks and it rained on and off all day, though thankfully there was no wind and the sound was flat-calm.
The supplied clothing - base layers, neorprene vests, fleeces, fleece hats and rainjackets - kept everyone comfortable. The veggie packed lunch was generous too.
Our guide Tobias, aka 'Bob' had plenty of info and advice with an easy rapport with the three double kayaks he was guiding.
On the drive back to Te Anau, we stopped at some beautiful locations to snap Kias, enjoy another hot brew up and take part in the Milford Olympics. All in all, a grand day out.

Thanks for the brilliant review Kenny! The drive from Te Anau is an experience in itself, with breath taking views along the way. We tailor the kayaking to individual abilities and we're happy to hear the weather exceeded your expectations. The snow capped mountains are breath taking at this time of year. We aim to provide the highest standard of gear to set you up for the day and a substantial picnic lunch is always key to keep your energy levels at their best. Our guides are known for the genuine enthusiasm and their love for kayaking shines through on the trip :)

We booked this trip a few months ago, coming form the UK. Unfortunately the weather was not what we expected, as it was rainy and cold "ish"... but OMG, as Blake, our guide said, rain means one thing...more waterfalls!!! And I swear I've never seen so many in my life, all sizes and shapes... The overnight stay was fantastically organised, we shared the time over dinner with story telling and all sorts. The tents and sleeping bags, as the mats, were all of really good quality and allowed us to spend a night dry and warm!!! The next day (today) the weather was a bit calmer and we did a long kayaking back to base. All round a fantastic trip. Thank you to Blake and Keith (second guide)
I would strongly recommend this trip!!!! PS: We don't have photos available yet, but they'll be posted later....

We're happy to hear the rain didn't effect your experience and that you appreciated the spectacular waterfalls that wouldn't be there without it! We aim to offer a high level of customer service to make it more laid back for you on the trip. The campsite in the evening is a great way to wind down, enjoying food and sharing stories with the rest of the group. We look forward to seeing your beautiful photos and we will pass on the awesome feedback to our guides :)
