Such a great way to experience Doubtful Sound, especially considering the fjord looks at its most magical first thing in the morning, well before the first cruise boats make their way onto the water.
Tips:
1) do not underestimate the importance of a good sandfly repellant - the base camp has a fly-screened area but you will inevitably be swarmed everywhere else
2) take as little as possible, although the kayaks are relatively spacious, your trip will be much more enjoyable if you don't have to carry kilos & kilos of unnecessary weight
3) take earplugs and a super absorbent travel towel - the tents can be leaky

Good advice for heading out into Doubtful Sound for an overnight (bug spray for day trips too). Think the ear plugs would be great in case your neighbouring tent buddy snores perhaps.
Travel light is good advise, but take plenty of warm clothing and food/snacks.

Despite wet and windy weather almost the entire 3 days this was a kayaking trip well worth doing. Our guide Nicola was fantastic, friendly, knew how to manage and enthuse her team, acted professionally and kept us safe. The place is magical in the rain with roaring waterfalls, dripping rainforest, soaring mountains and lots of friendly sandflies! We saw dolphins briefly, penguins and some very windy paddling weather.
Not for the feint hearted, but any kayaker who likes an adventure out of the usual yet with a guide who knows her stuff, this could be for you. Of course better weather will make this quite a different experience but we saw the place as it was, camped in the rain, paddled with a great team of travellers and loved it. The kayaks are very stable and easy to manage. Try it if you can.

We spend the day kayaking in Milford Sound and LOVED it! We had a great group and a wonderful guide Brad. This was truly a unique experience and much better than taking a cruise around Milford.

Thank you for the wonderful review Mehan.
We'll pass on the awesome feedback to our trusty kayak guide. We're happy to hear you agree it's a once in a lifetime adventure, and no better way to see the fiord then kayaking - the only way to get up close and personal with the beautiful wildlife it has to offer and immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings.

We spent a week kayaking with Fiordland Wilderness Experience in Preservation Inlet, staying each night on the Breaksea Girl, a comfortable approx 20m ex-fishing vessel with sails and a motor. The kayaking was brilliant, we were safely guided and very fortunate with the weather in wet Fiordland, having only one wet day. Guides were knowledgeable able the area and skilled in their supervision. Kayaking gear was provided. The views are magic.

Meals cooked on board the vessel were delicious and plentiful. The wholesome food ensured we always went back for seconds. Roast lamb - yum! Fish pie - exquisite. A hot shower was available at the end of each day if desired.

Would love to do more trips like this.

My partner and I went on t Doubtful sound overnighter. It was a truly spectacular trip with stunning scenery, wonderfully remote camping, excellent equipment and a fantastic guide who made everyone feel safe, comfortable, was informative and professional at all times. We were lucky with the weather, but it would still look spectacular in the rain. The paddling wasn't too hard, but be prepared for the sandflies during the daytime - they are relentless. Overall an amazing experience, I'd recommend it to anyone keen for a real adventure.

Thank you for the fantastic review David,
It sounds like you had the perfect experience on the overnight kayaking trip.
We are happy to hear you appreciate that Doubtful is beautiful in both its diverse climates. There is certainly no better way to experience the fiord than up close and personal in kayaks!
