The guided walk on Ulva Island with Beaks & Feathers was one of the highlights of my trip to Stewart Island. Our guide had only one other person on the walk (total 2 guests) and she was able to show us all the birds unique to Ulva island's Eco system, answer all our questions and have a relaxed exchange. Her first-hand conservation experience on the island allowed an in depth discussion of how New Zealand is dealing with introduced pests. The cost was the same as other companies but I was happy to know that this one is locally owned and operated. I left with a shared sense of responsibility due to Ange. She was fantastic- highly recommend this company!

There are several operators who offer guided walks on Ulva, and this one was recommended by our accommodation. I liked the look of their website, and what they offered, and we were not disappointed. Ange has worked in conservation and lived on Stewart Island for years, and is clearly passionate about the area, and the indigenous birds and plants. She is very knowledgeable, and pointed out different species of trees and plants as we walked. She was anxious that we should see as many birds as possible, and stopped and backtracked a little, several times, so we could catch a glimpse of some of the more timid birds. Watching the robins and the wekas coming close was so special! Ange really works hard to make this a great experience, and only works with small groups, so it's a very personal tour. A great experience, don't miss it!

We chose Beaks and Feathers for our guided walk on Ulva Island, because it promised a small group experience. We were not disappointed.
Angie is a local and is passionate about the birds, plants and trees on Ulva Island. There was only my husband and myself on the tour so were able to have 3 hours of special individual attention. Angie was very knowledgeable about the history of Ulva, and pointed out all the different trees and plants. She knew where to find all the birds and we managed to see most of them in our time. I was impressed that she could hear even a Karariki eating seeds in the canopy as we passed underneath so were able to see these birds up close as well as hear them in the tree tops.
A very recommended outing. It was good to have some knowledge of the different bird calls before we did our multi day tramps
