My only problem was the steep hill up and down which one has to walk to get to everything after one has been met at the ferry or airport and taken with bags to the lodge. Bags are also taken back down. As a result of its height above Oban the views are idyllic even in the rain. I suppose that is the other problem is that it rains a lot on the island - it is after all a rain forest environment. Bring your boots, over-clothing and head protection. An excellent feature of the lodge facilities is the hot air drying room.
One arrives and everything is explained and any help with your activity planning immediately offered. There is a free laundry facility, a luxurious lounge with of course the view to sit and marvel at and in which continental style breakfast is available from a very early hour, and there is a full kitchen for guests to cook in or merely get coffee etc
throughout the day. My room was spacious with the view (as have all the rooms), well carpeted, curtained and furnished. The luxury of a good size bath was fully appreciated.
The help I had from hostess Chris was brilliant; a big thank you to her.

Room tip: Frankly any room is good

A peaceful deluxe bed and breakfast next to the bush and 5mn walk from the city (village) center.
A great place to watch the native birds as well as the boats arriving to the Island. It has six guest rooms all over looking the sea. room 1-2-3-4 open directly onto a large shared balcony. A kitchen is also available for guest use as well as a laundry. A continental buffet breakfast is served in the dining room every morning. Lisa is a very good host and very knowlageable about the Island and what activities are available. 4 Restaurants are available in the village: one pub with so so food, one fast food fish and ship in a trailer with very nice fast food style of food, a French creperie and an Fantastic restaurant call Church Hill where you can enjoy excellent Sea Food and meat (it is a must. One of the best restaurant in the south Island). At the Churchill Restaurant you have to book in advance and if you wish to eat the best crayfish in the world you have to order them before 2.00PM. The lodge is open September to May and it is very busy.

Room tip: Room 1-2-3-4 have the best view with the shared terrace and completly renovated, room 5 has no privicy and room 6 is fine but less view.

An absolutely stunning place to stay. Beautifully presented and high quality. The outlook from the deck is absolutely stunning an amazing sun rise. The Tui's fly past and sit in the trees right in front of you along with other natives.

Staying here is like being a guest in a friend's house. The rooms are large & very comfortable, and the view from the verandah outside is amazing. The Kakas (New Zealand parrots) come to sit on the railing there. Lisa, the hostess of the lodge, is available to answer any questions about Stewart Island, and also to recommend activities. We took a couple of the walks she recommended, and also the kiwi trip - we saw a wild kiwi! This is a place we will definitely come back to.

We would highly recommend the SI Lodge. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and we were made to feel right at home with the use of the lounge and other facilities. Lisa was extremely welcoming and very helpful with booking tours - in fact she sorted us out on our first day, for which we were very grateful!
