The vessels are modern, comfortable and fast. The booking system practical and convenient, with affordable long term parking available on the mainland.

Great ride across Fouveaux Strait with very competent skippers both ways. Good seating and views. We had good weather but this crossing can be rough so if you don't have good sea legs be prepared!

We were possibly very lucky with our journey as it was really smooth. Best part for me was. 1. Free tea or coffee. 2. Seeing albatross flying alongside the boat. Awesome. Staff were really good helping people who were asking questions about the island etc.

Not sure what to expect but booked a return trip on the ferry so my wife and I could experience Stewart Island. We started off in Invercargill and used the shuttle service provided ($20 each) from our hotel to the ferry terminal. Check in was quick and are bags loaded into the bins. The ferry is a good size and after an interesting safety talk we were off. The sea was not too rough but we did experience a king tide as we crossed the bar and this provided the most interesting part of the journey as we surfed through the waves and the waves crashed over the front of the boat. After that it was like a harbour cruise with little to comment on. If you do get seasick, don't sit at the front of the boat, stay near the rear. The trip was an hour long and after docking our bags were available after 10 minutes. The return trip 5 days later was even smoother and a pleasant trip from a wonderful time on the island. The shuttle service then returned us to Invercargill airport.

We sat in the wrong place for a tumultuous ride: up front and to the left, so I could extend my bad leg. It was a difficult five barf-bag journey for my wife, with the impact of the boat hitting the oncoming waves wearing her down. Tonya was superb, with wet towels for the neck, words of encouragement, and ferrying away the used bags. The first 1/2 hour from Bluff is the rough one, the 1/2 hour approaching Stewart Island is much calmer.

Tonya met us at the dock on our return and had an outside bench seat at the back for her, so she could be in fresh cold air looking at the horizon. She also had a blanket for my wife and a supply of bags, which were not needed. Here are the other things we learned to do. Don't eat for at least an hour before. Crackers are good. Put an earplug in the ear opposite to your handedness. My right handed wife put it in her left ear. Two hours before, she took "Sea Legs", which contains Meclizine Hydrochloride, best rated seasick drug on drugs dot com. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, I believe the combination of all these factors made for an easy return journey
