A well run enterprise with passengers well looked after. For the hour or so trip from Bluff to Oban our crossing was about a 6 out of 10 reasonably confused seas so standing up and holding on with both hands meant the queasy stomach survived.
The return journey some days later with a following sea was calmer and slightly ethereal with misty curtains draped over land forms and the mutton bird islands as we skipped past. The way to travel to get more interesting history and stories from the skippers.

Better to use if you prefer to travel by boat, and save a few bucks rather than flying. Be sure you have a semi-strong stomach for the ocean can be rough.

Otherwise great views leaving Stewart Island.

We had been warned that it can be a rough crossing--we had calm seas both ways but I could see why the boat might get tossed around. But it's a fast hour to Stewart Island and a lot more convenient than the plane ride--which can also be rough!

From an easy friendly phone call booking the night before to when we returned back to Bluff it was a great experience. Everyone working was engaging & super friendly/helpful. Skipper & crew-who he introduced to us with their names was awesome. Free tea/coffee & they even help you take it back to your seat. Lovely clean boat, the sailing was fab. A wonderful experience, thank you ❤

After 4 days of good weather we were heading back to Invercargill for the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival. It was raining on and off from midday and now the 3pm ferry was away. Staff were organised, well trained and put passengers at ease. The crossing in the catamaran was rocky and some people felt uncomfortable although staff paid good attention with advice and help to these ones. No one was ill and the swells across the Strait were only 2-3m waves when closer to Bluff. The skipper's very confident manner reassured me that this was just an ordinary day and of no concern.
