After 4 days of good weather we were heading back to Invercargill for the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival. It was raining on and off from midday and now the 3pm ferry was away. Staff were organised, well trained and put passengers at ease. The crossing in the catamaran was rocky and some people felt uncomfortable although staff paid good attention with advice and help to these ones. No one was ill and the swells across the Strait were only 2-3m waves when closer to Bluff. The skipper's very confident manner reassured me that this was just an ordinary day and of no concern.

This catamaran sure is smooth ~ Even on the return trip when the sea was 'choppy'. The staff are great giving lots of sight seeing info etc

Kia Ora Shelley, thanks for the review. It can get a bit choppy at times however pleased to see that the crew were taking good care of everyone throughout. Kind Regards, the Stewart Island Experience team.

Excellent service from the Stewart Island ferry to company. We broke down en route to the ferry, and they were amazingly helpful on the phone reassuring us that provided we arrived before the ferry left we would get on it.
Lovely staff, spacious well maintained ferry. Thanks so much for a lovely experience

If you aren't good at traveling by sea, then I suggest you fly. However, if you want to get a feel of what it's like to live on Stewart Island , then the ferry is the best introduction. The ferry is rarely cancelled, but if it is then its for a very good reason; the Forveaux Sound is one of the roughest stretches of water in the world.

Kia Ora John, conditions on the Foveaux Strait can be quite different from day to day and we're pleased you made the trip even on one of the rougher days! Hopefully you had a fantastic time at Stewart Island when you were here.
Kind Regards, the team at Stewart Island Experience.

The catamaran was clean, modern and provided a mixture of mostly individual seating with a few tabled booths (snacks can be purchased with free complimentary tea or coffee available from small bar) as well as outdoor seating- first on best seated! Baggage gets stowed in large containers that are then covered before getting (via forklift) winched on to the rear of the boat where they are tied; small packs and bags allowed with you (1 per person). Timely and efficient on both trips (approx 1 hour each way), the crew of three including the pilot were happy to answer any questions we had about the ferry itself, islands, weather etc. Both terminals have seated lounge area with toilets and tourism pamphlets/DoC info available to peruse while you're waiting to board (check-in 30 minutes before departure) though a cafe serving snacks and hot drinks (we were hanging out for a coffee after a long early morning drive to get to ferry) might have been nice (note, there is a cafe within walking distance close to both terminals, or come prepared and buy before you drive to the wharf at Invercargill). School holiday periods usually have a special deal where a child travels free with a paying adult, which was great for our group. At $135/adult return trip we thought this was pretty good value and it was a unique way of seeing the mainland as well as other islands including Stewart Island from a different vantage point... and it sure beats swimming!! Easy to get on and off (we saw another ferry winch a wheelchair on board). One trip a bit rodeo (think bronco billy in a smooth but predictably rolling way) and the other was almost eerily smooth like oil! Felt safe though!
