If you aren't good at traveling by sea, then I suggest you fly. However, if you want to get a feel of what it's like to live on Stewart Island , then the ferry is the best introduction. The ferry is rarely cancelled, but if it is then its for a very good reason; the Forveaux Sound is one of the roughest stretches of water in the world.

Kia Ora John, conditions on the Foveaux Strait can be quite different from day to day and we're pleased you made the trip even on one of the rougher days! Hopefully you had a fantastic time at Stewart Island when you were here.
Kind Regards, the team at Stewart Island Experience.

The catamaran was clean, modern and provided a mixture of mostly individual seating with a few tabled booths (snacks can be purchased with free complimentary tea or coffee available from small bar) as well as outdoor seating- first on best seated! Baggage gets stowed in large containers that are then covered before getting (via forklift) winched on to the rear of the boat where they are tied; small packs and bags allowed with you (1 per person). Timely and efficient on both trips (approx 1 hour each way), the crew of three including the pilot were happy to answer any questions we had about the ferry itself, islands, weather etc. Both terminals have seated lounge area with toilets and tourism pamphlets/DoC info available to peruse while you're waiting to board (check-in 30 minutes before departure) though a cafe serving snacks and hot drinks (we were hanging out for a coffee after a long early morning drive to get to ferry) might have been nice (note, there is a cafe within walking distance close to both terminals, or come prepared and buy before you drive to the wharf at Invercargill). School holiday periods usually have a special deal where a child travels free with a paying adult, which was great for our group. At $135/adult return trip we thought this was pretty good value and it was a unique way of seeing the mainland as well as other islands including Stewart Island from a different vantage point... and it sure beats swimming!! Easy to get on and off (we saw another ferry winch a wheelchair on board). One trip a bit rodeo (think bronco billy in a smooth but predictably rolling way) and the other was almost eerily smooth like oil! Felt safe though!

Not for the weak stomachs! Our crossing was on a relatively calm day but the fast cat still rocked and rolled. Expertly navigated by the captain. A more difficult day would be interesting.

Probably everyone says something like this! I think we were lucky that the sea was relatively calm. It felt like being at an adventure park on one of the water attractions. There boat was certainly moving around quite a bit.
However the seats are comfy enough and the space you sit it in quite small so I felt safe and secure. The boat itself feels sturdy and is very clean. We arrived safely. A couple of people were sick. I had taken a tablet and plan to do that for my trip home again.

"Splashy" was the word the skipper used and yes it was a bit rough but not too bad. Felt very safe the entire way. Staff helpful and concerned for young traveller in front of us who was feeling seasick. I had heard horror stories about this trip but was very pleasantly surprised by how easy and comfortable it was.

Hi there and thanks for the review. The crossing conditions can vary and every person has reacts differently to the motion of the sea. That said, we're delighted how comfortable you found the trip to be and how helpful the staff were onboard. Kind Regards, the team at Stewart Island Experience.
