Our captain narrated the interesting bits of the crossing and we even detoured a bit to watch an oyster ship being up its trawler full of oysters. Somewhat choppy water but the ferry was right on time.
It was very rough, the captain was an excellent seaman and stemmed the swell with aplomb. Do suggest taking anti seasick pill before hand!
Hi there Cazzamamma, thanks for the five start review.
This trip is short but very informative of the wildlife on Stewart Island and especially Ulva Island with a nature walk. The whole experience was well done and well led.
Nice trip on a calm day, While I am sure it can get rough at times the large Catamaran provides a steady platform for the one hour crossing. Large luggage is put into special carriers before being loaded onto the boat. Great trip.
We recently got the ferry from Bluff across the straight to Stewart Island. It was a really rough day, a few were sick on board but they were well looked after by the crew on board. The trip over was vet informative with a commentary most of the way. Definitely will do the trip again.
This is a special place. It's an island off the South Island of New Zealand . It has less than 400 people , 4 restaurants , and 1 petrol pump. It deserves at least 4 days. Wander the foot paths and tracks, view wild Kiwis, eat blue cod or maybe even muttonbird, visit Ulva island , watch the sunrise &/or sunset , chat with the friendly locals and fellow visitors , etc. Take at least 5 days . Bring rain gear and a wind proof jacket and enjoy.
Kia Ora and thanks for the review. We're thrilled to read such nice comments about our wonderful slice of paradise down here! Definitely an underrated destination. Hope to have you visit again in future. Kind Regards, the Stewart Island Experience team.
