A nice seamless journey to Stewart Island. I get motion sick, but was able to sit outside for the journey. The crew are great, and there were no problems.

Hi there and thanks for taking the time to post this five start review. We're delighted to see how well the staff looked after you when you were travelling, it's not nice being seasick so glad you enjoyed everything regardless!

Foveaux Strait is the notoriously fickle stretch of water that separates Stewart Island from mainland New Zealand. There are several crossings daily, the one hour dash across the strait is performed by one of two small but powerful passenger ferries in almost all weathers.I was lucky enough to cross in poor conditions, 45 knot winds were whipping up a heavy swell that was close to the limit for crossing the strait. The crew were remarkably cheerful, informal and informative. The ferry powered away from the wharf dead on time, and we were quickly being pummelled by waves that often obscured the horizon. Taking this trip in bad weather is NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED. The ferry rolled and pitched heavily, and sitting for the duration of the crossing was the safest option. The crew were very attentive to those who became seasick, and are adept at spotting those who need help. Berthing and disembarkation was swift and effective. Whatever they get paid, they're a breed apart, and deserve more!

Staff were great on both trips. On the way out from Bluff got the commentary of points of interest. Staff were very good with people who were not coping with the large swells.
I liked the return trip discount that we got by booking return.

Our passage was cancelled because of bad weather so they rebooked us for the next day. They were very nice. Let us use their phone to call our B&B and other tours. Spent the night in Invercargill and went the next morning. Ride was still rough but the boat is very tight and the seats are inside, dry and cozy. The crew was very professional and entertaining. Trip back was easy, breezy. Parking is close to terminal. They are strict about carry on but will check luggage. You might call before driving very far just to make sure the ferry is going.

My stomach is still in my throat after the boat ride from Stewart Island to Bluff this morning. And this was supposed to be smooth sailing! However, if you want to visit Stewart Island, and you should, you have to make this trip twice. Sorry!
