We had a very smooth crossing to Stewart Island, and a slightly more bumpy ride back to Bluff. The ferry is comfortable, and we saw plenty of wildlife - albatrosses and shearwaters - from the windows.
We have just returned from a 3 day trip to Stewart Island and travelled on the Real Journeys Ferry both ways. This trip is not for the feint hearted but Stewart Island is definitely worth it! I cannot praise the crew highly enough, from skipper to deckhand, they were extraordinary, especially the youngest of them who was a delight. We had,for us, a very rough crossing, and although none of us were sick, some on the boat were, and the crew was just lovely. A big 'Thumbs Up'
The day we did it there were strong winds & very rough seas. The Skipper handled the boat expertly & the crew members did an outstanding job of tending to the many passengers that were nauseous & sea sick & they did it with caring & compassion.
Great job Guys!!
Popped a sea legs tablet and enjoyed the roller coaster feeling of the swell. Tim and the other captain did a great job of navigating the waves. Thank you.
I have always wanted to go to Stewart Island so took the opportunity when in Invercargill. The weather was cloudy and wind was high but decided to go anyway. The skipper and crew were very good. They gave us info about birds and island on the way over. It was a bumpy ride but the boat (and the passengers) handled it well. The return trip back was rougher as we were going into the swells. It was very hard to move around and some made good use of the paper bags. The crew made sure those who were not well were looked after.
The trip takes 1 hour each way and is good value for money. I took the option of the bus ride (an add-on cost) so did not have to worry about car parking.
Hi there and thanks for the review. We're pleased to see you enjoyed the trip over the strait to Stewart Island when you had the chance. Hopefully you will come back and visit again. Kind Regards, the Stewart Island Experience team.
Ferry was specially designed to traverse the tricky waters between Bluff and Stewart Island. - be aware the waters can get really rough and at times departures are delayed or postponed because of high seas! Inconvenient but for passenger safety! Buy tix on line to book during busy summer months.
