The crossing is short but potentially exposed to considerable wind and swell. The catamaran is handily stable no matter the weather.

Pleasant trip with a drink and enjoy the views especially as you get closer to the island. Polite and knowledgeable crew. To get sea sick on this I think it would have to be very rough

The way to go to Stewart island is in the open ocean and the waves make the boat bumpy which can be tough for people who are not use to it, but for me it was a great ride on the waves with the jumps.
Get prepared if you are not able to handle a hard sea.

We experienced a pleasant trip to Oban, Stewart Island in calm conditions but then dealt with a fierce storm for our return to Bluff.
Our first attempt to cross was aborted due to big seas and high winds ... very professional consideration given.
Our second attempt was successful ... although very rough! The company were well prepared with extra staff to deal with unwell passengers.

While being really keen to visit Stewart Island, as a poor traveller I wasn't looking forward to the crossing - though at only an hour I was prepared to put up with it. The crossing over was rough (even staff admitted so) but with eyes closed, breathing controlled - & the help of the ginger tablets you can buy at the terminal, I was absolutely fine. The return journey 4 days later was much gentler and also OK but, as others say, staff are always on hand to help in an unfussy way any and all passengers suffering. NB: I don't understand why anyone would want to go just for a day - the joy of Stewart Island doesn't lie in a few hours in Halfmoon Bay!

Thanks for the review. We're delighted to see you step out of your comfort zone and attempt the sometime bumpy ferry crossing of the Foveaux Strait. Great to see the staff on hand to make sure you were ok on the trip. We totally agree with you - one day on Stewart Island is not nearly enough!
Regards, the team at Stewart Island Experience.
