We absolutely loved our trip. I was apprehensive about the amount of walking but I needn’t have been - we spent 2hours doing an almost entirely flat walk out to the beach which only took us 20mins (and not marching by any means) on the way back so that gives you an idea of distance - it’s a very slow pace with lots of pauses to listen for kiwi.
We saw 2 kiwi on our trip, one very briefly and one who came very close and was walking around us for quite a while. It was amazing and the guides were knowledgeable and friendly.
We left around 8:30pm and were on the boat until sunset so went to an island where we saw some penguins. We also saw albatross and black shags around the little islands. A free cup of tea or coffee was great on the way there and hot chocolate and biscuits on the boat back were very welcome as we didn’t get back until 1:30am. It was a very late night but so worth it, we would recommend to anyone.

A couple of nights ago we went out and had the most amazing night. We saw albatross, yellow eyed penguins, seals and 5 or 6 kiwis. Most of the kiwis were in the bush and 1 on the beach. The guides were excellent and very informative. Would highly recommend doing this tour.

I never knew that walking very slowly in the dark could be so exciting!
After a cruise around seeing Mollymawk Albatrosses, sea lions and the three types of penguins in the area, as well as pulling into a secluded bay on Ulva Island to listen to the twilight birdsong, we then landed on a remote area to embark on our kiwi search.
Grace and Gabriel (who clearly knew their stuff and were excellent guides) split us into 2 groups with Grace leading us at the required snails pace through the bush. It was not long before we came across a lone Kiwi out foraging the darkness. The kiwi stayed with us for 5 minutes or so wandering around our boots illuminated only by the allowable red torch of Grace. Awesome. We continued our search along further tracks and and along an isolated beach with grace using a heat sensor to search out Kiwis and any rouge sea lions! It was along night and we didn’t get back to shore till 1:00am but it was so well worth it. Do it.

"I never knew that walking very slowly in the dark could be so exciting!" - love that line! It really is exciting, always alert, listening for that distinctive noise of a kiwi making its way through the bush searching for food.
Delighted to hear how well our team looked after you and that you got to spot a kiwi in its natural habitat.
Thanks so much for taking the time to post the five-star review - the team at Stewart Island Experience.

Great trip with informative and knowledgeable guides (Grace & Gabrielle). Liked that it started with a little bit of Stewart Island/Kiwi history, and the boat ride included some nature spotting - seal, penguins and other bird life. We saw three kiwis which all behaved differently. An awesome evening finished off with a hot chocolate and biscuit on the boat ride home.

My friend and I went on this excursion a few days and both enjoyed it very much despite not seeing a kiwi. Gabriel our guide tried valiantly to locate one, but couldn't. We did hear a kiwi call very close to us, which was a first. Gabriel was adorable, knowledgeable, and attentive. He told us we were entitled to a 20% refund of the fee we paid, which I wasn't aware would be offered. It was a memorable night, despite not seeing the elusive kiwi bird.
