This is THE way to go if you want to book a trip to the Milford sound. Our driver was amazing, he knew the roads like the back of his hand and I felt very safe with him behind the wheel. He was witty, knowledgeable and very considerate. Because there was only 16 people on the bus we were able to stop at a bunch of different stops to take beautiful pictures- there is no way this could be done with a large motor coach full of 40+ people. We made two stops on the way to the sound that had bathrooms. Only one stop on the way home for bathroom use. The food was very good- two cold salads, lamb kebabs, chicken kebabs, bread and water or juice.

Highly recommend this small personal guided trip to Milford Sound with the BBQ Bus. The Guide/Driver, Marty was the owner and knew all the places to stop for the best views and away from the big tour buses. Picked us up in Queenstown around 7:30 am and was back around 8:00 pm. Marty shared personal stories about NZ and also served up a wonderful lunch, BBQ chicken, lamb, sausages, vegetarian and side dishes. Plenty of food and no rushing around or crowded buses. Also the Milford Sound boat was smaller than the large toursity boats and the Captain took the time to meet us and speak with us, a wonderful crew. If you prefer a small group, this tour is highly recommended.

Rob was our driver and chef for the coach ride and cruise to Milford Sound. He provided a running commentary during the drive and the BBQ lunch was delicious. He coped well with an unforeseen event and ensured we all had a good time. We had exceptional weather and saw a penguin, seals and got wet in the waterfall (our own fault as we were warned). Definitely recommend this activity when you visit Queenstown. Thanks Rob for a memorable day.

We booked this small group bus tour well in advance of our late February trip to Queenstown. Two days prior, we took a large bus tour to Hidden Sound. Both tours covered some of the same highway en route, and both were all-day. But the BBQ Bus tour was the best of the two. Rob was our driver and he was excellent. I was seated up front on the bus and watched him driving with all that shifting! I said he would be better off with a bus that has an automatic transmission. He said he much preferred the fun of manually shifting. The drive over to Milford Sound was punctuated by several sightseeing stops, including the meadow where some of the scenes from Lord of the Rings was filmed.. For us, the en route highlights included the "Mirror Lakes" and watching a group of kayakers running a series of white water rapids. The break from the long drive to have a BBQ picnic also added to the day's memories. But the grand finale was our boat tour on Milford Sound. This was greatly enhanced by the fact that it had poured rain the day before but was quite sunny during our tour. We joined some other tourists on the boat for the tour on the Sound. The captain was skilled and even cruised up to the cliffs to that tourists standing down on the lower bow could get sprayed from the waterfalls. Rob drove us skillfully back to Queenstown where we arrived between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. in time for a delicious dinner. Highly recommend this tour!! Wish you the best of luck on the weather!!!

We joined the tour in Te Anau and were welcomed aboard by our Tour Manager, Graham. It was a rainy day however, Graham’s knowledge of Milford Sound and his great personality ensured we all had a fabulous day out. The bonus of rain meant we experienced beautiful waterfalls along the way.

So hands down I’d say the Milford Sound BBQ Bus was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had.

If you’re traveling alone, with a group of friends, or family - I’d say choose this over any other tours leaving from Queenstown.

You leave Queenstown on a bus with 12 other strangers but return as acquaintances because your driver/guide/chef is a great people person.

Nigel was my driver and cook (yes!) and tour guide and he truly exemplifies the friendly New Zealand spirit.

Not only do you get 1x1 attention but he takes the time out to educate you about the things you’d never have a clue about.

As an American solo traveler this tour had the best balance of spontaneity (we all jumped out of the bus to take a pic of a Kia at the side of the road), punctuality (we were told we would arrive in Milford Sound at 2:30 and we got there at 2:29), along with a fantastic meal (we were told to keep an eye out for a bobcat - look don’t pet!).

If you go to Queenstown book this trip and ask for Nigel.

Give him a big fat tip because he deserves that and more.

Leave feeling like you’ve spent an entire day catered to you!
