We were picked up from our hotel by our Driver/Tour Guide Angela and were safely driven on this tour that was one of the best trips of our trip to New Zealand. Angela had a vast knowledge of the local history and countryside. We especially enjoyed her recommendation of Miles Better Pies. My venison pie was one of the best I had this trip and I have to say I had a lot.... On to Milford Sound where we boarded the Three Masted Mariner for a trip that it's hard to find words for. We even had two Bottle nosed Dolphin travel along side us. The waterfalls and the proximity that the
captain got us to was amazing. You really have to add this trip to any trip to the South Island.

Hearing about the history of the boat and the voyage out to Walter Peak was most interesting. Lunch at Walter Peak was just unbeatable. Plenty of great tasting, flavoursome food, in addition to the working farm demonstration, made this much more than just another tourist trap. At the end you felt like you understood much more of the hardiness of the original settlers in this area. The 1900s sing along on the way back was just the icing on the cake!

This is an iconic place to experience in New Zealand, and it didn't disappoint. The weather had been dry for a week, which, in Milford, represents drought-like conditions, I gather. There were many fewer falls than is apparently typical, and those that were running were shadows of their robust selves. An all night rain dramatically changed all of that, and it was great to see the difference when we got up the next morning.

The cruise was fine. The food was good, and they were able to accommodate some dietary restrictions (gluten and dairy) pretty well. Meal seating was assigned, and that seemed to work out well for most people.

The nature commentary was helpful and informative, as was a quick tour of Harrison Bay in the evening. Staff were efficient and helpful, our room was clean and well maintained, if a bit dated.

I found the structuring of the cruise itself a bit odd. Leaving in the late afternoon meant the Sound was emptying of other traffic, but we went part way down the sound to then retrace our steps and moor overnight in Harrison Cove close to where we started. The next morning we re-visited the same route out to the mouth of the Sound and then back to port. The short length of the Sound and vulnerability to wind and weather may explain most of that, I just wish we could have gone further out or stayed further out for more of the cruise time. I think you could get most of the experience of the Sound in a day tour without spending the night (and associated costs) staying on the boat. But if sleeping on the boat is your thing, this is the only game in town.

Enjoyed the tour, for sure. Incredible landscape.
