This company is a bit more expensive than some other options, but it is so worth it because of the great buses they have (after all, it is a five hour drive one way and the difference the windows in the ceilings (!) also make once you enter the park with its high mountains is huge). The guide was also very knowledgeable and entertaining.
I took the option with flying back and WOW am I happy that I did. I got to see beautiful Milford Sound from a bus, a cruise boat and from the air. It was just great - definitely one of the highlights of my tour around New Zealand.

Real Journeys have this down to a fine art and we say a special “Thank You!” to our bus driver, Hudson, who took us from Queenstown to Milford Sound and back whilst being an excellent, safety-conscious and eloquent tour guide! We can imagine that experiences may vary during the peak season with hundreds of people on numerous boats cruising the Sound, but on this cold and wet winter’s day everything was just right for us: we were on a big boat, one of only three others on the day, and felt like we had the place to ourselves.

We decided to experiment the 10:30 cruise as we didn't want it to be crowded and it was a good idea.

The boat navigates quietly in the sound and let you discover (sometimes really close) the falls, seals and nature beauty.

The nature guide explains you the origins of the sound and what you can find in it. He is not talking the whole cruise so can also take advantage of the journey and peacefulness of the place.

Take at least 2 hours from Te Anau to reach the milford sound by car. During winter, landscape may be frozen in the morning and you must be careful on the road (a lot of black ice).

Have in mind that it is not possible to park your car just next to the wharf and you have to walk from the parking (if any disabilities you can be dropeed off in front of the boarding area).

Be careful in winter, the wharf is slipperry!

Very professional team from the lady who booked us the trip at their office and made sure our 3 year old son was traveling for free despite a computer glitch saying otherwise.

On the morning of the flight we received a phone call from the company asking us if we could depart an hour earlier. That was fine for us but they insisted on buying us coffee and muffins in milford sound which was nice.

Pilot was a great guy and took good care of us, the ride was smooth and beautiful.

The cruise was ok, the highlight of the trip really was the flight.

A must-do for all visitors. We went in June on the Nature Cruise (2 hour long) on the Fiordland Navigator boat. We chose the 10.30am departure due to less crowds, which was a great decision as the boat was really quiet. The weather was amazing - a mixture of sun, cloud, rain, rainbows and wind - which made for a very atmospheric and spectacular trip. We were lucky enough to see dolphins and seals. The staff were fab and the commentary informative and comical. Good coffee machine on board (flat whites etc) and a free hot soup and roll were served up for us as it was cold out.Highly recommend.
