I've just visited Milford Sound for the 2nd or 3rd time (not 100% sure which) and it is amazing as always. The scenery both driving from Te Anau and then out on the Sound itself is just phenomenal and leaves you in no doubt as to why people keep chosing it as a filming location for big budget movies (or small budget movies for that matter). We did the Nature Cruise with Real Journeys and this was excellent. Quality vessel with personable and knowledgable staff/commentary. We also did the Milford Discovery Center (see seperate review). This trip is an all-weather experience. If it's wet you get the ethereal atmospere and the waterfalls and if it's dry you see a bit more of the peaks. Either way is stunning so this is a win-win and I would advise would-be Milford travellers not to get too hung up on the weather forecasts. All you need to know/worry about is that if it's not safe the boat wont go out...simple as that.

The Real Journeys cruise on the Fiordland Navigator was an extraordinary experience. I do not take cruises on large ships. Never have and never will. However the uniquely styled Fiordland Navigator is perfect for the day and a half journey into what is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. The "cruise" is more like a nature expedition. It's a three part journey. The first leg is a 50+ minute ride on a catamaran style fast ferry. The nature adventure begins as soon as the boat leaves the dock. Very competent captains immediately begin the nature program by describing the area as the boat speeds at 22+ knots (comfortably) to your next stop. Upon docking you are placed on a bus (again very comfortable) for a 55 minute journey through the beautiful mountains. Again the driver of the bus describes the flora, fauna and topography of the beautiful Fiordland of NZ. Finally you arrive at the ship (Fiordland Navigator). The young and very hard working crew welcomes you and assigns you to your comfortable cabin. Note that the time from the original boat ride to the ship is two beautiful hours. The ship departs for the 1.5 day cruise of Doubtful Sound at around 2:30pm. The ship can accommodate just over 100 people (give or take a few). Immediately you begin yet another comprehensive educational experience from the crew as they describe the characteristics of stunningly beautiful Doubtful Sound. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Indeed the captain welcomes guests to visit his wheelhouse to see the ship and the areas beauty from his perspective! Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are good and served buffet style. You'll see some of the most diverse landscapes and wildlife anywhere in the world. Seals, birds, dolphins and dozens of waterfalls will leave you with lasting memories. Take the short but unique kayak paddle or the ride on one of the ships tender boats to witness the area from an up close and personal perspective. When the ship anchors for the overnight stop, take time to go on deck to see the most brilliant night sky! The stars, constellations and milkyway are brilliant. The area is so pristine that I'll never forget the captain stopping the ship to send out one of the crew on a kayak to pick up a floating soda can that some idiot had carelessly tossed into the water! That's how proud kiwis are of the pristine environment of Doubtful Sound! One strong recommendation is to bring bug repellent if you do take the kayak or tender ride. The sandflies can be nasty if the conditions are favorable for them to be out and about! Enjoy!

Travelled from Queenstown on a day trip to Milford Sounds and did the nature cruise on arrival. The scenery was stunning for the entire journey and only got better as the journey progressed. Great commentary on both the coach and the cruise and the weather, although overcast with some showers, was kind enough to allow us to take some wonderful images. This is a must do on any journey to New Zealand

Our cruise even on a cloudy day with some drizzle was just wonderful. Be sure to stand on the open deck area so you can fully appreciate the height of the Fjord walls and feel the spray from the numerous waterfalls cascading into Milford Sound. The luncheon served was basic but tasty and fresh. We greatly enjoyed this tour of the spectacular visits along Milford Sound.

We were blessed with beautiful weather on this cruise and the nature walk which covered the first day of the Milfrod Trek was made all the more interesting by our guide. It was like walking in a fairy world... so beautiful... with the crystal clear river sparkling along beside us! We had a soup and a sandwich lunch which was appropriate. I loved this walk... it was an easy pace, interesting facts about the flora and fauna by a knowledgeable young lady, stunning setting and good company... there was 4 of us! This is obviously weather dependent... on a rainy day it would be a different experience! Take repellent... sand flies are abundant!!
