We caught the bus from Queenstown at 7-15am for the 300km trip to Milford sound. Our bus driver was Barry who gave us a running commentary during the trip, not only was Barry a very good bus driver, his commentary was informative and humorous. He stopped at all the top spots for photographs and still managed to keep us on time for our cruise once we got to Milford Sound.
Our cruise was amazing, if you only go to one place in your life, make it Milford Sound. When the boat noses into the Stirling falls, get a place right up the front, yes you get wet but the photographs are amazing.
Recommend you order lunch when you book (much easier) Picnic lunch consisted of a club sandwich, fruit, drink and snacks which was fresh and tasty. Make sure the ticket your driver gives you for the cruise says "Picnic Lunch" or you may miss out, luckily we had a voucher from our travel agent showing we had paid for lunch and it got sorted very quickly.
It is a long day, we got back to our hotel at 8-30pm, so take some snacks for the trip.

It is recommended for families especially for kids who have not seen dolphins, penguins etc. the captain of the cruise know of the hide out places of dolphins and penguins. Will be interesting and exciting for kids. It is quite a long drive into milford sound.

Incredible journey through old-growth trees, mountainous terrain, and breath-taking views. The bus ride from Queenstown to Milford Sound was long (4 hours) but the driver - Greg - filled the time with history of the area and picture-taking stops of the area. The boat ride on the sound was gorgeous and relaxing.

We are really happy we chose the nature cruise with real journey and their big comfortable boat. At the start, we didn't know wether we would prefer a smaller boat with another company. So, Yes it is a big boat, and yes there are 190 pax onboard. But it didn't felt overcrowded at all, there's plenty of space. We actually board the last ones and doing a great place to sit, no need to rush. And we were actually very glad to be on a large boat, for the water conditions in the Fjord, even if we were really lucky with the perfect weather that day.

The Nature cruise was great, and the speech we had was excellent. The real journey guide explained about the Fjord, it's geology, fauna and flora, its discovery, etc... in a very interesting way. We recommend !

My wife and I undertook the overnight cruise into Milford Sound onboard the Milford Mariner. We also used the bus from Queenstown to Milford Sound.

The return bus journey was comfortable and our driver/guide was excellent. Craig was humorous, informative and great fun. We stopped plenty of times for photos and toilet breaks which broke the long journey up. The only down side was a group of Americans who wanted us all to hear their voices instead of Craig's (despite being told to be quiet)! Not his fault though, just their ignorance!

The cruise itself was very good; the cabins are comfortable and clean. The food plentiful and tasty and the staff were pleasant, helpful and keen to help. We went kayaking which was great fun & well organised. On the negative side the bar prices are high. Considering the amount charged to go on the cruise we'd have thought 1 or 2 complimentary drinks wouldn't be too much to ask. The cruise itself departs at 4:30pm & returns at 9:15am the next morning; we thought this was too rushed, especially taking into account we had to be up really early to get breakfast. After all, everyone is on holiday; surely an extra 2 hours on the water with a later arrival back alongside is achievable, even taking into account the crew have to clean the boat for the next groups.

The scenery though is incredible and simply jaw-dropping. A special mention has to go to the professionalism of the skipper who navigated the boat close into the base of some waterfalls. Great fun to stand at the front of the boat and get drenched!

Just be aware it rains, rains & then rains again here!! This has the added bonus of creating powerful, high waterfalls which seem to fall forever. The low cloud adds a touch of mystique and eeriness to the sound. Quite simply it's nature at it's raw & unequalled best.

With a couple of tweaks here and there it would get a a 5.
