I will admit I was terrified to fly in such a small plane (a 10-seater) but it seemed like a much better option than hanging my head over the rail of the ferry for an hour. The trip to Stewart Island was quick and even though it was bumpy at times, it was OK because it didn't last too long. My husband and daughter thoroughly enjoyed the views from the plane and were not bothered at all by the "bumps". We found all staff to be friendly and courteous, both on the island and at Invercargill. It was expensive but I have to believe it was much better than a turbulent ferry ride.
Why bother with the Ferry when you can be on the Island in just over 30 minutes. We felt safe and looked after. Value for money and not much more than paying for the Ferry. Love Stewart Island. It's so relaxing and laid back. The South Seas Hotel sell the best food. Crayfish and Seafood are their specialty
Flying to Stewart Island is the only really reliable way to go if you are not a good sailor, the ferry trip can be very "lumpy" as the Foveaux Strait is very changeable, with even on relatively calm days, high sea states and high winds. The flight over is relatively short with spectacular views of Southland, Foveaux Strait and Stewart island. However the down side is they operate a monopoly and the flights are expensive for such a short flight.
I took a flight to Mason Bay - the turbulence was awesome. We couldn't land at Duck Creek so the pilot did a big banking turn to land at the gutter. What a way to start a tramp! I also got a ride back to Invercargill.
Fantastic flight with friendly pilot, awesome view of the ocean, great take off and landing. Best way to get to Stewart Island from Invercargill.
a must do the views are to die for .i bit rocky and very small plan.take your camera .only takes 40mins
