This is real flying. Plane only holds 8, twin propeller engines.
Loved it
I flew to Mason's Bay and we landed on the beach / totally awesome!
We booked the flight instead of the ferry as it is much quicker, gives aerial views and is not far out in price.
It was a great experience flying over.
A bit of fun that they weigh the passengers as well as the luggage - but you can tell why when you consider the size of the plane.
We left our heavy luggage in their store at Invercargill.
On the way back, unfortunately, the weather was too bad to fly, so we were transferred to the ferry. Didn't really mind as we were not in a hurry and it gave us the experience of both routes.
However, the problem arose with the luggage left in Invercargill.
We were, of course, a lot later than we would have been by plane and, despite being told there would be someone there, everyone had gone home. Not ideal. Someone else in the group of passengers had even been picking up a rental car key from them - so couldn't.
Fortunately a different pilot with the company happened to come in and was able to sort us out - but that was by luck, not design.
I hope they have now sorted things out so this doesn't happen again - but just bear this possibility in mind when you leave things in their office.
We booked the coast to coast through Stewart Island flights. Most flights were cancelled that day due to low cloud in Oban but we were lucky that Mason nay was clear. The trip itself was great although visability very poor at times. The water taxi organised by SIF was on time. Two mix ups made the day difficult. We were told the water taxi would drop us at 6pm in Golden Bay where our B&B pick up was waiting. We were dropped close to 7 at the main wharf leaving our host waiting for some time at the wrong place. The second was that SIF were going to leave our overnight bag at their Oban depot. When we checked in they did not label it so despite being named the same as our flight ticket it didn't get loaded onto the plane and we were left wet and muddy from the walk with no clothes till the next day and no way to contact the now closed airline office. (Luckily our B&B managed to get hold of someone to find out what happened). There was no apology or explanation call. Very dissapointing and ruined what was otherwise a good day on Stewart Island.
We were a group of 11 friends tramping on stewart island. Everything was organised quickly via mobile phone..nothing was too much of a bother for the staff.
We had always wanted to visit remote Mason Bay on Stewart Island - and here was an option to do so as part of our visit to Stewart Island. We flew from Invercargill direct to Mason Bay. Yes we landed on the beach - so expertly. Stayed a night at Mason Bay Hut then walked across the island to Freshwater Landing for a water Taxi to Oban. A wonderful experience and Yes we did see Kiwi up close that night. The walk across the island took us 5 hours - a very hot day and quite a bit of mud from the previous weeks of rain. Not a pretty walk, but the water taxi trip was another highlight We would recommend this trip to those comfortable to staying in Back country huts and able to walk 5-6 hours. The highlights were seeing kiwi in their natural habitat ,the plane landing on the beach, the water taxi trip and the feeling of remoteness. Recommended
Efficient, well priced and scenic way to get back and forth to Stewart Island from Invercargill. Some seats slow you to take good pics. Try to sit next to pilot if you can!
