We had booked to do a day trip on Stewart Island with a couple of extra tours in March 2024... read more
We were a group of 11 friends tramping on stewart island. Everything was organised quickly via mobile phone..nothing was too much of a bother for the staff.
We had always wanted to visit remote Mason Bay on Stewart Island - and here was an option to do so as part of our visit to Stewart Island. We flew from Invercargill direct to Mason Bay. Yes we landed on the beach - so expertly. Stayed a night at Mason Bay Hut then walked across the island to Freshwater Landing for a water Taxi to Oban. A wonderful experience and Yes we did see Kiwi up close that night. The walk across the island took us 5 hours - a very hot day and quite a bit of mud from the previous weeks of rain. Not a pretty walk, but the water taxi trip was another highlight We would recommend this trip to those comfortable to staying in Back country huts and able to walk 5-6 hours. The highlights were seeing kiwi in their natural habitat ,the plane landing on the beach, the water taxi trip and the feeling of remoteness. Recommended
Efficient, well priced and scenic way to get back and forth to Stewart Island from Invercargill. Some seats slow you to take good pics. Try to sit next to pilot if you can!
The ferry trip to Stewart island is great but flying over on a fine day is spectacular and only takes 20 minutes.
If you have only a short time to visit Stewart Island , take a flight with Stewart Island Flights , then you will have more time to see around the Island as this Island is one of the places to see.
We did the half day trip offered by Stewart Island Flights and found it to be good value. We enjoyed the little six seater plane on the way to the island and the eight seater on the way back. John, our guide on the island, was knowledgeable both about the place and the Maori heritage. The meal at the pub was good - my husband said it was the best seafood chowder he had tasted.
