Was last here a couple of years back.
It's a little out of the way, it had the same wacky decor, and great food, well that's why we came back.
We had the paua fritter and seafood platter for entrees, followed by the warehou and smoked sirloin for mains. All great, no room for dessert this time.
Service was good, probably the stand out restaurant in Dunedin.
Be back in another couple of years!

Sirloin steak w/potato mash is exceptional. The flavours were all there; right across the board. Impressive, but were a bit slow to react (bringing our cake out) and the risotto appetizer was the opposite of plentiful. Great job.

Plato is not the easiest restaurant to find. It is tucked behind a pedestrian overpass which makes it very hard to see the signage.

Once inside you are transported back to the 1970's in a restaurant that is filled with nick nacks and coffee/tea pots. The floors are polished concrete, the seating comfortable old chairs that are well separated from the "neighbours".

The food is very good, served with bold flavours (perhaps a tad too bold for the delicacy of the fish) and generous portions. Whether the bold flavours are too much is a matter of personal choice. There has been commentary on the pricing. Yes, the pricing is at the high end. Two comments - it is seafood and secondly the portion sizes are generous. Headline pricing might appear high however when adjusted for the portion size it was much more reasonable.

The service was friendly and efficient. The menu was fully explained. The beers and wines on offer were excellent.

If you are coming here for an elegant fine dining experience you may be disappointed. If you are coming for the food, served in a casual relaxed, slightly quirky atmosphere then you will not be disappointed.

Overall, a restaurant that I would be happy to return to for a meal.

We got a set menu as we had a large group. The set menu was basic, no entree. I got the fish which was sole fillet (very cheap fish) Took 1 1/2hrs for our dinners to come out then another 30mins for desert, the desert was a bit of a let down, canned strawberries when they are in season :(
Good atmosphere none the less.

The table was reserved, but the service was slow... it was the waiters first night but he didn't know a thing. The meal prices were expensive but the decor was not. The menu was complex and flavoursome but the food was not. I enjoyed my salmon but my partners seafood chowder was disappointing.
